I have discovered the most marvellous treatment for healing stubborn superficial wounds on dogs. It is called Melladerm and is a honey based ointment with vit A and calendula and is often used to treat pressure wounds on people. It probably goes by another name in the UK. Being a paraplegic myself I have often had burn wounds and the dreaded pressure sores which take simply m-o-n-t-h-s to heal. The honey in this ointment is a natural form of debrider, i.e. it removes dead tissue WITHOUT damaging the new tissue. A friend of mine had a bitch with an open sore who was feeding pups, so she couldn't have any form of cortisone or anti-biotic. After a day or two of using this ointment the sore had virtually disappeared. I have been using it on my whippets for years and absolutely swear by it.

That's interesting. I bet if it was made with raw Manuka honey it would be even more effective. I shall have a word with my herbalist friend. 8)

That is really good to know.

I used manuka honey cream on my whippet's pressure sore but this sounds much better. Thank you lorna anne.

I was watching one of the Animal Cops ... 'Wherever 'programmes the other day (heartbreaking but compulsive viewing!) and one of the Vets was treating a dog with old open sores. She just squeezed honey direct into the wound and then bandaged it, the dressings were changed very day and I was most impressed with the healing!

when my tippy lost her leg we left a jar at vets and on home return we used it and she is hardly scarred at all , i also used manuka honey cream on ex partners psorisis (sp) with fab results

brilliant stuff

My vet advised using Manuka honey to aid wound healing when Fred managed to undo all his stiches on a lump removal.

I can honestly say that I thought I saw a marked improvement in the healing when i did use it. It took a while to heal but I kept forgetting to use the honey and had to keep the wound bandaged, which probably didn't help, but I remember feeling quite encouraged when I took the bandage off one day after using the honey and saw an improvement. I'll try and remember the Melladerm tip.
