A friend of mine is looking for a pup, does anyone know any breeders/owners who may have any?

Hiya Jimmy :)

My first ever dog was a mannie, I think they're brilliant dogs. We used to breed and show under the affix Geifang, I think Mum may be able to recommend some breeders but she''s ill at the moment. I'll get her to post when she's back online when she's better.

Jac

what is their temperament like?

they seem to be nice dogs; I don't know why they aren't a bit more popular

a year or two ago, the KC gazette had a special volume on 'endangered' British breeds and they included at least a couple of ads from Manchester terrier breeders

I think you'll find that there is a very small gene pool and you have to book a pup well in advance.

Thanks Jac, and to everyone else.Hope to see you soon Jac i've had transport problems or would have brought the boys and the dogs down to Westy see you soon. :))

It's a long time ago now, I was 4 and had her till I was 18 but she was very smart and quite feisty, my Mum & dad were convinced she talked to me (w00t) (I used to play with her in my bedroom with my toys and she'd actually join in) :b

I used to handle her in junior handling (I qualified for Richmond with her when I was 9) We also used to enter comps like dog with waggiest tail and dog with best trick. (We would put a Man Utd T-shirt on her and go into the ring and she'd head butt a football back and forth)

I don't recall her being destructive but she could be a typical terrier in regards to scrapping with other dogs (I.e. once started they won't back down) She also was probably the most efficient ratting dog I've ever seen, the way they flick them in the air and break their necks with such efficiency was amazing. She didn't seem to do the ragging thing that you see with terriers but even with toys, she'd flick them up in the air in the same fashion so I presume it's a Mannie thing?

Mine shape wise was very different from dogs I see in the ring these days and the only similar images I've seen is usually in old dogs books where they're more stocky.

Must admit it's weird having the JRT now cos she's always hyper 24/7, Mum says this is typical terrier behaviour but Gyp was definately more laid back in comparison.

I'm saddened that they're on the 'endangered' list as they're a great little dog with lots of personality and make excellent companions.

mannies were always hard to sell as pups when i used to breed them so a lot of folk didnt breed much cos they thought they wouldnt be able to sell the pups :(

i gave a few of mine away to friends or just charged a token amount.temperament can vary from bloodline to bloodline.personally i dont like the way a lot of the breeders have gone over the last 10 or 15 years.me and jac popped over to the mannie ring at crufts a couple of years ago and tbh i was disappointed with what i saw.jacs right about their efficiency as ratters.a lady i used to know was the only professional female rat catcher in the uk and she only used mannies.the throwing something back and breaking the neck is a typical m annie thing.when we had pups in the nest they would exhibit this kind of behaviour at 4 or 5 weeks old, with toys mainly but their favourite toy was an old sock tied in a knot which they would spend hours with throwing it over the head in the action of killing rats.the world record for rat killing in pits which they used to do in victorian and edwardian times is held to this day by a mannie called billy that killed 100 rats in 6 and a half mins.(i think this was the amount and time, but im not sure)they arent a typical yappy terrier breed, theyre quite quiet, they only bark when theres something to bark at.theyre great with kids,100%,clean,disgustingly healthy,i dont think theres much i ever went to the vets with mine, all in all our family could never understand why they werent more popular.but we used to put it down the the rise in the popularity of the more glamorous, exotic, foreign breeds (folk are always attracted to something different and unusual and so the native breeds suffer)theyre very fast too,our first bitch gipsy was entered in a terrier race at a game show we went to one year for a laugh.shed never been in a trap before so when it opened she was facing the wrong way cos she thought that was the way out!anyway by the time they got her out and she saw me at the end of the track screaming her name she shot past the other dogs then went back again.all the old timers who were there were gobsmacked, saying what the hell was that?! (w00t) i had enquiries from a lot of the terrier men there that day cos theyd never seen a mannie before, and they were impressed by her.which was sad cos it was in this area that they first originated. :( (they used to be called the old english black n tans, but were later called manchester teriers cos the best ones came from this area of the north west of england.they were a working mans dog)there was a couple called trevor and pauline gore who lived in bolton who owned a champion bitch of mine and who bred champions from her.i know theyre still involved in the club and are still judging at championship shows and i think theyre on the club committee.theyll know who to point you towards depending on what youre looking for.if you like i can send you a pm with their address and phone number. :)
