Hi all,

I have a almost three year old bitch and a dog who is still a few months off a year, My question is at wot age is considered the earliest you would allow a dog to mate? as my bitch is due in season soon and I don't want them to mate until the dog is ready and is at a point where when he does hes not going to hurt himself or the bitch. Please don't get me wrong I have absolutely NO intention of allowing it this time but what I need to know is would it hurt him if he caught her before a certain age as if this is the case then one of them will stay with my parents until the season is all over with. thanks in advance for any advise.

We had this worry when we kept a dog pup, and his mum came into season - he wasn't interested at all until he was over a year old. I don't suppose this happens all the time though - so I suppose you will need to watch them. Although he wasn't interested, we made sure we separated them if we went out  I'm not sure how old dogs are when they can mate successfully - I think normally around 18 months, but I'm sure someone else will give you the answer though  My 7 month old boy thinks he can :teehee:

So does Scrumpy (w00t) thing is tilly stands there and lets him....

Im quite interested to know the answer to this, although Tilly has been done

Some as young as 6 months would be quite happy to have a go

Logan for example was 7 months when he first experienced one of the girls in season - he was VERY much excited at the appropriate time and im sure would have given it a go if he'd been allowed.

Lots of pups have been sired by dogs under a year old. I certainly wouldn't be complacent.

The mounting of spade bitches / other dogs is not the same thing at all - this is to do with establishing pack order and a dominance thing. Some bitches do this a lot as well and obviously they are not trying to mate!

No it wouldn't hurt him - however, you would obviously not let it happen until it was the right time for yourself. I find keeping dogs and bitches in different households at that time is a solution that works well for us.

Dogs can become fathers at a very early age . Ive known one be used at stud at 6 months and produced puppies , So should he be given the opportunity he will certainly try to mate her

The amount of puppies is irrelevant as its the bitch who decides the amount by how many eggs she produces as he produces thousands of sperm (w00t)

Thanks everyone that's really helpful. I will definitely be on my guard. He has been riding her for at least two months but recently I have noticed that the seriousness of the act is far more intense :b :- "

I get how it would be bad for the bitch to have pups so early, ie carrying, and giving birth etc

But is it a bad thing for a dog to mate early?

Physically it's not going to do it any harm. However, if it's allowed to mate very young, you haven't had chance to really see how the dog matures. Also, whether there are any undesirable traits (conformational, health or temperament wise). Hence, how do you know you really want to use that dog? Just my opinion

Yes i see what you mean...so you would want a nice fully grown matured male to see what he would be putting into the puppies

That is just my opinion and there are so many different things to consider. We are planning and researching dogs for when it is the right time to mate Ruby. Part of this is looking at the progeny that the dog has produced already.

However, there always has to be a first time the dog is used doesn't there? People who know their lines very well i expect feel more comfortable using a young dog as they will have a very good idea of what will be produced (hope you understand what i mean!)
