MAYA

Maya is a 3 year old greyhound girl. She was surrendered in to our care as an unwanted pet, but we suspect that this isn’t the full story. She is in poor condition with a thick kennel coat that indicates she was not kept in a home. With some good food and TLC, though, it won’t be long before she’s a sleek black beauty.

Maya is new to our kennels and we are still assessing her personality. So far she has been a real little trooper, polite and friendly with everyone who visits her kennel. She is just begging to be loved and hugged and we hope to find her a home very soon.

Maya has been good with our other greyhounds in the kennels and enjoys her walks. She has not been tested with small dogs or cats but these can be carried out prior to adoption if required. There is a chance she may be cat friendly as she has no record of racing.

It is likely that Maya has not been in a home environment before, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding during the first couple of weeks and allow her time to settle and get accustomed to the changes. It usually takes 10-14 days for new greyhounds to start to settle down in a home, and really all they need is a bit of time and patience.

Like most greyhounds, Maya will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 20min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week.

In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don’t shed as much as other more popular dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.

**UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2010**

Sweet little Maya has now been moved in to a foster home where she can finally get some much needed TLC. She has greatly improved over the past month, however, and her old thick kennel coat is now gone and replaced with a gorgeous shiny one. She is now a sleek black beauty and is really starting to enjoy life.

We will update soon with Maya’s progress once she settles a bit more in her foster home. Until then please check out the gorgeous girl romping in the garden with her new foster family, including a sheepdog, a Labrador and another greyhound.

**UPDATE: OCTOBER 2010**

“Wow look at me now!” Sweet little Maya has come on in leaps and bounds since arriving in to our care. Her thick, dull kennel coat is completely gone and she is a real sleek, shiny beauty now.

Maya has been in a foster home for the past few weeks and has definitely made herself at home. She is now fully housetrained, sleeps through the night and is ok to be left with other dogs for company. She has a passion for soft furnishings and likes to gather up all the cushions, throws and dog beds she can find, pile them all together and sleep in the middle!

Maya is sharing her foster home with a couple other dogs including a sheepdog and another greyhound whom she loves. She is relishing the chance to romp and play with her new friends, and is in general very good with other dogs.

Maya is a real dote and tends to make friends wherever she goes. Her happy-go-lucky personality is very infections and you can’t help but smile along with her big grin. She is going to make an absolute perfect pet for someone.

**UPDATE: OCTOBER 2010b**

Maya continues to settle in and is now almost part of the furniture in her foster home. Maya really loves her comfort. Once she claims a bed it’s almost impossible to get her off!

Maya was initially not eating very well. However, the addition of a little bit of gravy added to her food has solved that problem and has earned her the nickname of the "Bisto Kid" in her foster home. With the increase in appetite, Maya has gained more condition and is now a real black beauty.

Recently Maya went to PetMania pet shop in Cork to help promote greyhounds as pets. She behaved fantastically with the crowds and critters of the pet shop and really enjoyed all the fuss and treats she got. She is sure to be a fantastic little family member for whomever decides to adopt her.

This little girl is in foster care in Co. Kerry, Ireland, and can be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK or Europe if a suitable home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by Kerry Greyhounds, and we ask only for a donation to help cover costs. She is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.

If you are interested in adopting Maya, please email me on tamakin_84@yahoo.co.uk for our adoption application form and information pack. Thanks!
