a newly-minted k9-officer & a support-staff employee who worked at the same prison, were engaged to marry; the couple had a pair of Dogos that they'd bred, previously, who were kept as pets; the dogs lived in the house, not in an I/O run or kennel.
[The dogs were not k9-officers, nor corrections-dept dogs.]

Woman killed by her own dog was engaged to a K-9 officer

the woman was found outside the house, near the roadway, already badly mauled, with the dog "standing over her" - a passerby phoned 911, & the dog was shot & killed at the scene by a state-policenik. The woman later died, at a nearby hospital.
As one of her co-workers said, "We'll probably never know what happened."
    R.I.P, Jenna Sutphin. :(

her fiance, by the way, is a 12-yr veteran in corrections, but just became a k9-handler very recently.
    IOW, he's not a highly-experienced k9 officer; he may be a highly-experienced pet-owner, dog-breeder, or trainer, but the article doesn't say.

It won't let me see the link but that is awful!
Stories of owners being killed by their dogs really shock me!

    HUNTINGTOWN, Md. -
The woman mauled to death by a dog in Calvert County, Maryland Thursday was the fiance of a Prince George's County Correctional Center K-9 handler. The couple lived together with a breeding pair of large Dogo Argentino dogs, one of which attacked the victim.
The dogs were pets, and did not work with the officer.

The victim was Jenna Sutphin, 28, a former support-staff employee at the Prince George's County Correctional Center, according to Yolanda Smedley, spokesperson for the jail. Sutphin's fiance is Cpl. Jason Hammer, a 12-year veteran corrections officer. Hammer is one of the department's newest K-9 handlers.

Sutphin was found mauled and critically injured outside the couple's home early Thursday. One of the large Dogo Argentinos was standing over her when she was discovered near the shoulder of Rt. 4 in Huntingtown. A passing driver called 911 to alert police to the situation. The dog was shot and killed, by a responding Maryland State Police trooper. Sutphin died later at a hospital.

Smedley said co-workers are stunned and devastated. 'When she worked here, she was a ray of sunshine', Smedley said. 'I don't know that we'll ever know what really happened. The animals were part of their family. They loved them.'
Smedley added, 'I know that he's devastated right now, along with her family.'

Dogo Argentinos are muscular dogs that weigh up to 100 pounds, according to the LINK: American Kennel Club's website.
'The Dogo Argentino is a pack-hunting dog, bred for the pursuit of big game, such as wild boar and puma, and possesses the strength, intelligence and quick responsiveness of a serious athlete', the website states."

Thanks for that, wow, how awful.
Is that an American breed then? Banned in the UK or are they just uncommon?

    .

I don't know if Dogos are banned from the UK -
they were developed in Argentina, hence the name, by blending 4 or 5 existing breeds; the aim was to establish a large dog with heat tolerance, as a big-game / hog-catching / property-guardian.
They are not LGDs, they won't bond to a flock or herd & protect them - they are simply very-turfy dogs who are often stranger-suspicious or outright intolerant [e-g, B4 the repairnik comes into the house, sequester the family Dogo].
Kinda like an Akita, but without the double-coat, & with bigger chips on their shoulders?

not my favorite breed, but IME not as frankly untrustworthy as Boerbels, nor as outright aggro as Caucasian Ovcharka / "COs" / Caucasus LGDs.

The owner should be charged with possession of several offensive weapons. These dogs weren't kept as pets or anything near responsible ownership. Sickening story

For information, the breeds banned in the UK are:

    Pit Bull Terrier.

    Japanese Tosa.

    Dogo Argentino.

    Fila Brasileiro.

For me I have only seen Pit Bulls, (incidently the legislation specifies the 'type' of dog, therefore if a dog is siezed as being one of these breeds or types it is up to a court to decide if it is or not).
