Messing in other peoples houses

Our dog is about seven years old and we have had her for two years. She came to us completely house trained and still is but when we visit other peoples houses on several occasions she has walked straight in and messed on the carpet. Is there any thing we can do to stop this or has any one any ideas why she does it. THANK YOU

She does it because she is scenting. In dogs, this is like saying 'oh okay, this is my place now and I'm putting a flag there so everyone knows it's my place.' Ths kind of behaviour is very typical and can take quite a while to train out of them. The best way is to start off by ensuring she goes straight outside to do her business as soon as you enter anyone else's home ... she then knows where she is meant to go and hopefully, once her bladder is completely emptied, she will be less inclined to scent. If she does urinate or mess in the friend's house, don't shout at her, just say NO firmly, then take her outside and say whatever word you use to indicate to her that you want her to do her business. My oldest and 'alpha' girl does this. She would be absolutely mortified if she went in our house, but if we visit a new (to her) place she can be caught trying to leave just a little teeny poo in a corner. As TonyB says, I always take them straight outside again once we've got to a new place, either out to their back garden if they have one, or back outside wherever they need to go once they've said hello. Sometimes letting them go before they go in isn't enough. She often has gone before going in, but something just triggers that instinct. If we stop it by taking her straight back out she never tries again.
