Hello

can you help we travelled through the channel tunnel back to uk minus our dog yesterday. When we arrived at tunnel checkin our dogs microchip failed to work and so they told us we would not be able to take our dog with us.

we were sent to a local vet where he was re chipped and injected with relevant drugs we were then told pick him up in 3 weeks time. The vet had contacts for people in calaise who would foster him for the stay. He has the microchip inside him even though it is not responding, he has also now had a double dose of drugs, so we have done everything within our power to be on the side of the law but still are made to pay and suffer all because a signal from a microchip which fails to work.

my argument is that we travelled only 6 months ago with the dog and everything was ok surely the French authorities only have to look at his passport to check his details and the chip number to confirm he is the same dog. we also of course visited the vet 2 days before this to de worm and stamp his passport. If anyone can throw some light I would appreciate it. I know the rabies risk and all that goes with this but if and engine fails on a car do you get a new car or do you repair the engine

This is my worst nightmare. I bought my own chip reader and check my girls' chips regularly. And I bring my chip reader with me when I travel across and check their chips before and after. Also did the chip work when the treatments were administrated before crossing back? The vet should have checked the chip to confirm he was giving the treatment to the right dog.

Unfortunately the only way to prove that it is the same dog IS the chip, so if the chip fails, you could be bringing any dog through - the chip is what confirms the identity. Paperwork is just that.

I don't mean to belittle what you are going through, as I said, it's my worst nightmare, but on the positive side, you only have to wait 3 weeks from the new injections. Before he would have had to have titres and a minimum of 6 months, and before that, 6 months quarantine no questions asked. It sucks, but I don't really think they can relax the rules any more than they have, and even then there are horrible people getting dogs through illegally - so I also understand you feel it's not fair that you have followed the rules and are being 'punished'.

I don't know what the answer is.
