I have a 5 year old male Beagle Harvey, he's got a lovely temperament and all he wants to do with any dog is run around and play. We've just put our deposit down on a make Springer Spaniel and we'll get him in 6 weeks. Harvey has met the dad and played well with him and we're thinking of taking him to meet the mum and possibly the pup if the breeder allows it I've been told you know if they will get on from the first meeting but I was just wondering if there is anything we could do to calm Harvey down and make it as stress free as possible as he's still quite boisterous for his age. Also I have been told that having two males can cause dominance issues and have them urinating over each others makers to mark their territory which can be solved by neutering. We have never needed to neuter Harvey and wouldn't want to have both dogs done if there is no real need to do so. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I have two male beagles age 2 and 9 they are both neutered ( I wanted to remove the risk of prostate and testicular tumours)

they are best of friends they run mad together, chew each others ears and generally play all the time. I would introduce them a couple of times before you bring the pup home if you can so that your boy recognises the smell when you bring him home for good.

Murphy was 7 years old and Rufus 8 months when I got Rufus, they sat in the car boot together for 5 hours on the way home and Murphy sat with his back to Rufus the entire journey home then I took them a walk and Murphy thought 'oh well if this pup is staying I may as well play with it' and they have not been apart since, sleep cuddled up together.

Even neutered they pee where the other one has peed on walks, I would set up a cage for the pup before you bring him home that way pup can have a safe peaceful area to eat and sleep and this gives Harvey some quiet peaceful time as well.

I know lots of people with two male dogs some neutered some not, some people have dominance battles others don't, it will just depend on your dogs temperaments and the training you give them.

Good Luck and post a photo of puppy when you get him xx

Thank you very much, we have a new pen in the making for Harvey, and a cage for Chester when he comes but when Chester is toilet trained and a bit older they will both be sharing the pen together. Hopefully Harvey will just want to play with him like he does with every other dog, and then at night they should be exhausted and not play in their pen. This is the only picture of Chester I have on my laptop at the minute but there will be loads more posted don't worry :)
