Not sure how many have moved in, there seem to be a couple of sizes from small to tiny, little yellow heads poking out and flicking their tongues at me:

Unfortunately it seems to be infested with some horrible sort of mite (I'd wondered why there were so many of the nasty looking things crawling on the heap), they seem to be affecting its eyes as they rather cloudy looking :( Normally they're very bright and beady.

I am rather fond of snakes but I hope it wasn't too much of a shock (w00t) lovely warm compost heap I suppose - hope you can get help from wildlife trust or someone about the mite infestation, poor old snakes. They're lucky of course :luck: :luck: :luck:

It would take more than a grass snake to shock me - I had my first adder encounter when I was about 4. I've never seen any adders around here, though the bailiff over the lake always claimed there were some around.

I don't think there's any thing that can be done with the mites, most insecticides are toxic to water life so I wouldn't use them (which is a pain as I've had problem with red mite in the poultry runs). Just hope whatever these are they don't get a taste for chicken drumsticks. I'm sure the snake will get rid of them when it goes for it's first dip in the pond (they are very good swimmers).

A nice one of a slow worm taken a couple of weeks ago

How interesting - I didn't know grass snakes were so colourful so had thought they were adders :- "

And Nicky, how great love snakes and have a boa - have you made anything pink and glamorous (involving feathers) for him/her? ;)

Cruella's markings are just great - want a collar like that :- " :D

Havent seen any grass snakes in ages (great pics btw) or slow worm, used to have them in the land behind my mums but seemed to have vanished unfortunately. Did use to see a few swimming in the lakes where I fished looking like Nessy with their heads held high.

:))

We've always had lots of both, but the slow worms had a very bad year following the last lot of serious flooding, I think a high proportion must have just drowned in their hibernation burrows. The grass snakes breed in my neighbours huge pile of lawn clippings; unfortunately the magpies know this and you often see them fly off with a young one  Sometimes you find young grass snakes and slow worms all curled up together in their favourite places.
