My Patterdale bitch needs a really good off lead run. But she has attacked yappy little dogs on leads several times. I have tried two different types of muzzles, even both at once and she manages to get the nose piece off eventually. She is small/medium size but very powerful. Has anybody got information on a fail safe muzzle?

I hope you find one that works, if not it's the lead for him I'm afraid but there must be one that works.

The only safe muzzle for a dog to run free in is one of the basket type. These ensure the dog can breathe properly and drink if necessary. As far as I know none of them are fail safe from being removed by the dog.

Greyhounds run in theirs all the time. I have never heard of any greyhound removing its muzzle. I would guess that this is because they wear them all the time they are out of kennels. This may be the answer for your little dog. If she were to wear the muzzle all the time she was out of the house then maybe she would be more tolerant of it?

Have you introduced it by putting something like cream cheese or fish paste on the inside? Only leave it on for short periods to start with and gradually extend those periods as her tolerance increases.

Have you considered working with a behaviourist to address her behaviour around other dogs? If you would like to do this then do contact a properly qualified behaviourist from either COAPE or APBC. Any use of the old fashioned methods will only make things worse.

Do be aware that a loose, muzzled, dog is unable to protect itself should it be attacked by another dog.
