My dog who is a jolly springerdoodle is very close and friendly and great companion has suddenly completely changed her behaviour in the house.

It is very upsetting. It started two evenings ago.

Normally in the evenings she joins me on the sofa, sometimes goes on the floor. Then when I get up to go to bed she is very pleased. Turn out the lights etc and she is off ahead on me - and always jumps on my very large bed before me. ..she is a very quiet comforting sleeping companion. All normal to us for the past 5 and half years.

So two evenings ago I was watching a film and I must have dozed off - and when I came to at 10.30 I noticed Bess wasn't in the room so I assumed she was in the kitchen - unusual but she has a bed there. Nope. I opened the back door, (she has a dog flap) and she was nowhere to be seen in my small garden. As I stood there wondering I saw a rustle and there she was under a bush of ivy hidden. It was a freezing cold night. Yorkshire 1st Feb. I got her out. and she was shaking all over. She did follow me to bed she was trembling in great waves and was very wakeful and panting. When I finally turned out the light at 3am she got off the bed and went downstairs. When I checked she had gone out into the garden again in the freezing cold and wet. (I do not have a hot house and never have heating on at night). I got her in and figured something was very wrong and phoned an emergency vet but it was too far for me to get to. So I closed up the dog flap on their advice as it was so cold and left her in the kitchen she was still shaking and trembling There was no way she was going to come upstairs with me..At 8 in the morning phoned my vet and took her straight in.

Vet thought she must be in pain. Checked her thoroughly but could find nothing wrong or abnormal except a slight resistance from her rotating her neck just a slight resistance to rotate no pain response. He gave her injection of analgesic and anti-inflammatory anyway. She seemed OK when she was out of the house and enjoyed both her walks in the park and woods. Seemed normal. Though she didn't want to get out of the car and return to the house. I thought she was getting better though and she joined me on the sofa quite relaxed, no more trembling, then suddenly about 9pm she turned to me and suddenly squeaked a high pitch noise and ran into the kitchen. (Dog flap still close) To distract her I took her for a walk round the block she was so fast and I felt she would have bolted if she could. She didn't want to go back into the house - finally with a bit of sausage roll I bribed her in. She had refused to eat or drink all day in the house. She spent the night in the kitchen.

So this morning back at vets. He wanted to give her xray to rule out something wrong with her neck. When I went to pick her up from xray he had left message to say she possibly had a lesion in the neck vertebrae. .He prescribed a mild tranquiliser (hormone based) and metacam to be takien in the evening.

When I got her home at lunchtime she ate heartily. She again has enjoyed two walks - normal excited barking when she arrives though slightly quieter ..stalked a squirrel or two. I didn't let her play with ball but she kept asking.

At six I gave her the medication - for calming pain etc and she lounged in relaxtion on the sofa with me and I thought it was all over...till about half eight when she quite suddenly got up and swiftly took herself off to the kitchen again. After about an hour I tried coaxing her back but nothing would encourage her ..tried offering her a bit of her favourite ice cream . She turned her head.. I left her. When it was time to go to bed I tried again - jolly and upbeat...opened the back door because she normally likes to run round the garden giving a quick bark to all and sundry ...she ran out barked - brilliant. and then straight under the bl*****Bush. It took me quite while to get her out - she is 20 kilos and was being stiff and unresponsive. So she is now in the kitchen. I have come up to bed. There is no way she is going to follow me.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I see the vet again on friday afternoon.

I am incredibly sad.

How very odd. Sorry I don't have an answer but a few words of encouragement - there are some people who post here with great advice, someone will be along soon. And as long as she is well during the day and eating, walking etc. (as she seems to be) that's a positive sign. Your vet has probably suggested this but is there ANY change in your lifestyle, habits or routine? Any change to her food ? What time is she fed in relation to the behaviour, could she have a sore tummy and feel the need to get out quickly? Might be worth taking along a poo sample when you go back just in case. And (this is way out there, hopefully Gypsysmum will post shortly and rule it out) but what sort of film were you watching when you dozed off - could there have been something, even a loud noise, that spooked her that she now associates with pre-bed time? Keep us posted.

No nothing. I wish I had not been dozing when the 'event' that frightened her first happened. Though it was the night of Storm Henry - high winds but nothing spectacular...I will keep you posted and thank you

Sorry i just amended my post to add something about the film. Please have another look.
