Hi Listers

Here is Kirsten's latest on Delta the Huntress.

Molly

www.taejaan.com.au

I let Delta out this morning and she didn't come back for over an hour. This usually means its hunting time. I did my daily routine, cleaning the puppy pen, doing laundry, feeding the hounds, taking a shower. Still no Delta.

I called her every time I passed the kitchen door. No Delta.

I finally got dressed (I have to go to work this morning) went downstairs and there's Delta, standing at the back door loooking like a wounded soldier - covered in blood. I thought oh my god, she was SHOT! And then I saw it...the lifeless body of her mortal enemy, his checkerboard fur weighted heavy by the cold rain. It was over. The skunk. He was dead.

I washed Delta to see what the damage was. The gusher was a small puncture wound at the tip of her ear. Other than that she has a few scratches. Nothing serious. She's been cleaned and dressed and is now on antibiotics for two weeks.

I'll give him credit for daring to battle the great huntress, but in the end, it was a futile effort to defend his woodland kingdom. The Reign of Delta is upon us. May God help us all.

Well done Delta

I loved that story when you posted it a while back. My sides were hurting when reading it. Hilarious

Hi Molly,

Not only is this a fantastic story but Kristen's abilities to describe it deserve a round of applause too, don't you think? What a wonderful life Delta is leading over there, no sign of those innocent eyes any more, eh? Sounds like showing is just a side line for her these days. How's she doing? Is she close to her US title?

Gail.

Great story :D

Just hope the skunk does not have whole gang of vengeful relatives :)

If so, they are dead skunks walking....

:ninja:

Delta is an amazing animal. She would live off the fat of the land, no problem, if mod cons were not available to her. Kristen is not only a good writer, but she has the patience of a saint with Delta's antics!

Actually, Delta is hot and heavy into her Fall campaign after being off for the summer while she was in season and one of my other girls was having pups.

A couple weekends ago she went Winners Bitch under one judge for a point and then Best of Breed over a champion for another point. She made the cut in a big Hound group, but no placement.

So she's halfway to her Championship and she still has 6 weekends of shows to go in 2007.

I think she and I came to an agreement. If I let her hunt and RUN during the week, she's very happy to oblige me in the show ring on the weekends. Its a win-win situation.

Delta's ring attitude is indeed markedly improved since she has become the most feared hunter in the Tidewater Region of Virginia.

She is actually quite a good girl. Kris lives on a very large rural estate on the James River and Delta always comes right back once she's done her hunt. She never goes towards any hazards or roads.

The problem with Delta was that in trying to leap 9 or 10 foot fencing to get OUT to hunt, she was doing herself injuries, so this is the compromise solution.

Naturally, when she is finished and we do go to breed her, the first thing we will look for in a sire is no vertical leap whatsoever.

Sounds to me like this lucky whippet has got it made! Good luck with her, I always admired her & those wonderful eyes when she lived here. It's great to hear what a wonderful life she's living.

Would you like another one? I've got one that jumps like a stag too - hunting skunks would be right up her alley: they don't run as fast as kangaroos!

Um, well, thanks, I think we're good to go for hunting, varmint-slaughtering, fence-jumping Whippets right now. But thanks very much, anyway. A very generous offer, I am sure! :- "
