 Walking the hounds this morning on the Common, loads of people about, and lots of good natured bottom sniffing going on. We followed a path around the Fort and in front of us was a GSD and a JRT being walked by a woman. Fynn was immediately interested in saying "Hi" to the JRT, and Archie hung back a bit, he is very scared of GSDs. As Fynn was wagging and playing with the Jack Russell, the GSD, ran over to him and bit him on the back.....He yelped really loudly, and I rushed to check he was OK. The woman called her dog without turning around, leaving me dumbstruck. I held both the dogs back, and comforted them. Fynn was shaken but skin was intact, so a hard nip (he was wet from the dogs mouth). We slowly walked on round, but the woman was dawdling and we caught up. As she took her route away, I decided to quietly tell her what had happened.

Me"Did you realise your dog has just nipped mine?"

Her"Well she would only do it with good reason"

Me "The puppy was saying hello to your other dog."

Her " Well he was protecting her"

Me "But the puppy didn't threaten the other dog"

Her " Did she draw blood?"(Bad attitude !!!!!!)

Me "No but you should muzzle her if she is prone to biting"

Her "She wouldn't have done it if your dog wasn't hassling"

Me "A responsible owner would muzzle a dog that had a tendancy to nip, and mine wasn't hassling, just being friendly"

At this point I gave up, she was so defensive and had heard Fynn yelp, just ignored it. I saw a woman further on, and was chatting to her about it, she said the GSD is always attacking her little JRT. It is a serial nipper.....apparentely this woman knows the family and the dogs are walked rarely, and poorly socialised. I am a wimp at confrontation, but felt I had to say some-thing....I just don't know what I would have done if Fynn had been injured badly.....The dog should be on a lead and muzzled........It's not fair on friendly dogs

:( Poor Fynn. Give him a big kiss from us.

If all dogs were off the lead and this happened, and it's not the first time, then I'd agree that she is irresponsible.

Dont worry Jo - Fynn has met enough friendly dogs to be able to put this encounter into the right perspective, and he's also a confident little chap, so I'm sure he'll be fine.

You were brave to confront the woman - good on yer! :D

Poor Fynn! :huggles: :huggles: Completely agree with Rae!

Poor Flynn, I would have done the same, perhaps she will give it some thought at home and keep an eye on her dog a bit more. I think people can be very defensive if they are in the wrong. The only extra thing I might have said nicely, was, you may be sued if the dog does some real damage or you may have to have it PTS, are you prepared for that.

Aww poor Fynn :(

Thanks for that......It took me a good 5 minutes to pluck up courage to say any-thing...I was going over in my head if mine had upset them in any way...If you know Fynn, he is 7 months old and very friendly...I was cross with Arch for leaving the scene...Big woos, he is supposed to protect us. he obviously sensed the mood of the GSD and was not going to pile in, little bro or no (w00t)

I'd mention it to the local dog warden  when that man kicked Josie for the second time, I rang and spoke to them just to make sure of what my responsibilities were as a dow-owner and the dog wardens were lovely. They said they had no jurisdiction over this man, but that they would log it, and then if other people reported similar incidents at least it was all on file. I'm sure they'd want a log of this incident, particularly if it's happeneing to other people!

Poor Fynn. It's so horrible when things like that happen. You must have been really shaken up by it :(

Well yes Helen, in a scared sort of way.....Trouble is, the Common is free for all, and a huge space, I may never run into her again. I don't normally walk at that time, but I am going up early in the heat to b home before 9.30. Normally we do late morning or mid afternoon. If I see her again, mine will be on leads and in the other direction. I am so cross now, but I am so crap at confronting. If her dog have had drawn blood I would have phoned the police...I have always got my phone on me just in case

I agree, you could say that if you see her again you expect her to put the dog on a lead at once to prevent it biting again. If she doesn't agree point out that another person may want to report the incident.

Poor Fynn I hope he is ok, :huggles: :huggles: it is hard to confront people who don't care especially if they have a nasty GSD with them  so well done you

I think you handled it spot on Joanna, hope Fynn is ok :luck: Thankfully for him he is well socialised with other dogs but for a new pup on his first adventure this could of affected him. I think you had every right to say something and you've done it in a reasonable manner.

Poor little Fynn :( .........He's alway's such a happy, friendly boy  .......

Oh stop....I am welling up now.........Delayed shock! Lloyd has just told me off too. He reckons as soon as we see a GSD ours should go on leads. We had one once, it is so sad not to be able to trust them :(

He just like his 1/2 sis .........so he'll be fine  Miya always see's the best in all and is never fased by anything :D .......I'll make sure Connie is nice to him on Sunday :) ......btw pub after racing ?? .....

Poor Fynn :(

I think if all the dogs were off the lead, then the GSD and the lady is in the wrong. It sounds to me like it has happened before, if it was first thing she would have been as shocked as you I'm sure.

I do think if her dogs were on the lead then it is different, it doesn't excuse the dog biting but she is controlling them.

I think you handled absolutely fine Jo, never a nice situation and I am sure it ruined an otherwise lovely walk with your 2 lads :(

Sorry but whats bread is a GSD???

If the dog had drawn blood what could you have done???

I sometimes have trouble with Tilly not coming when called, need help on that one  , and she sometimes hassles other dogs who are on leads and she wants to play  she wont come back and i have to go and get her and oppologise

GSD= Alsation (German Shepherd)

If the dog had drawn blood I would have reported the incident to the police.

I don't let my dogs hassle dogs on leads, they are on a lead for a good reason. If dogs are off leads, they should be safe with other dogs and kids, and if not, should be muzzled.

Try giving Tilly a treat when she comes back to you.

Poor Fynn,i hope he's ok :huggles:

Joanna,i think you handled the situation remarkably well  ,i know i wouldn't have been as polite as you!!!
