I went to our local heath this afternoon and the first 100ish yards of the path were lined with full dog poo bags - there must have been 30+. At the end was a man with a shovel, filling yet more. I got chatting to him; he didn't have a dog but wanted to do something for the environment so had rung up the council to ask for a supply of poo bags, and off he went poop scooping!

I commented on the awful people who don't pick up after their dogs, but he pointed out that on the positive side, most people do. He said that he'd come to the conclusion that people are either community-minded or they're not: if they are, they will pick up after their dogs, if they're not it doesn't matter what you say to them, they don't care and they won't. So there's no point moaning at them or about them - you can either moan, or you can do something about it... which is what he was doing. He said he wanted to get the path onto the heath looking all nice for Easter when people would be out walking more.

When I ended my walk, he had cleared away all the poo bags and was just closing the bin lid - which rather surprised me, as I didn't think they'd all fit in! He pointed to one last poo that was just 6' from the bin, but he said the owner might have walked on ahead and not have noticed.

What a WONDERFUL man, not only for clearing up mess that others have left behind, but also for being so positive and not complaining about the people who should have picked up the poo. He should receive an OBE at the very least, and probably deserves a knighthood :):):)

What a lovely story. Why not write to your local paper or, if you have one, neighbourhood newsletter? Either he might get recognition or perhaps it might shame dog owners who don't pick up (despite what he thinks about that sort of people).

What a treasure , bless him. These are the sort of people that should get awards....but no, give a knighthood to Ringo Starr for services to music
He sounds so lovely, hope everyone appreciates what he’s doing. We have a similar gentleman where I walk our dogs, the car park every morning is littered with pizza boxes, Macdonalds, cans and thousands of those little silver phial things ( some drug things) bottles etc and he’s up there every morning collecting it all into bags and takes it down the tip. I asked him why he does it...he used to have a dog that cuts it’s foot badly on a piece of glass and didn’t want it to happen to anyone else’s dog, he’s a lovely man too and must be in his seventies now .

The man is a star, but I don't think picking up after your dog is a community spirit thing, I think it's a dog owner's duty! I walk Eddi a lot on the riverbank and there's are piles of poo. I think it's disgusting, everybody should be able to use the bank and enjoy it without treading in poo.

Mayblossom, you mean you don't think Sweet Sixteen and Octopus's Garden were works of a genius? :D

I rather wish I'd taken a photo of all the bags lined up. I'm reluctant to publicise him locally because lovely people like him often prefer anonymity than recognition.

There's also a man in the woods who collects rubbish on his walks in the woods - like the man you know, MB, he doesn't want a dog to cut its foot. OH and I do occasionlly pick up broken glass for the same reason, but I keep thinking I ought to take a carrier bag and pick up rubbish more generally

Haha :D Now Yellow Submarine definitely worthy of a Knighthood.....not! :D

What a great bloke. Sadly, he'd have a full time job where I live :( I'd like to pick up poo like this and deposit it in the owner's garden/house, I wonder if that'd change their minds? As he got the bags from the council, I'd drop a quick mail to them praising his efforts.

What a great thing to do, especially if he doesn't even have a dog! What a hero!
There is only one path in my village where you can let your dog off lead and there is always poop left which annoys me so much! Especially since I know who leaves them!
It's gross, owners should always pick up, I mean I didn't even walk my dog for a week because her poop was so loose I wouldn't be able to pick it up (even though rain would have washed it away, and is guaranteed in Wales).
I think people are just lazy. There are not enough bins and they can't be bothered to carry around full poop bags all the way home.
I definitely think this guy needs recognition!

I never realised until I got a dog just how much rubbish is on the paths. With a scavenger dog you spend most of the walk looking at the pavement to avoid things that could do damage. We pick broken glass up, which I think some people take pleasure in smashing on the footpath for no reason. Luckily dog poo doesn’t seem too much of a problem where we walk. There is a woodland that we walk in where there is always bags of dog poo hanging in the trees; so they’ve bothered to pick it up but seem to think the dog poo fairy will come along to put it in the bin!

Totally agree with you, Rox will eat anything so I have to be careful on walks!
What annoys me as well is when you see rubbish on the floor, when there's literally a bin a few feet away!!! Admittedly I do sometimes forget where I've left the poop bags on the way back but I do go and get it on the next walk.
