I am having Ripples neutered soon and was wondering if ALL dogs gain weight after being neutered?

I am dreading it as she is so completely perfect, I have never neutered my girl dogs before and so don't know from first hand experience other than my cats being neutered...

No I don;t think so.

I think it depends on the dog and the age in which they are done.

Although I didn't have Oreo pre neutering and was done a while before we had her, she is a very lean dog and not an ounce of fat on her.

My brothers dog was done very early and she didn't put any weight on either.

I really do think it depends on the dog.

Sorry, that doesn't help much really.

My bitches are all neutered and none have put on any weight at all. It's down to how carefully you monitor their food intake. Weigh them regularly at your vet practice and you won't go far wrong.

It's not true that dogs put on weight due to neutering, they are the same as people "too much food and not enough exercise = fat"

My bitch and both dogs are all neutered as I want to eradicate as many potential life endangering conditions as I possibly can so that I have them longer.

Also animals tend to be neutered as they are changing from puppy to adult which is when they are likely to change size, shape etc anyway same as people who change around puberty.

Keep a regular eye on her weight and the amount you feed her, This is the advice I'd give any pet owner neutered or not.

without reading books or internet info, in my life ive seen dogs both gain a few pounds but also stay normal, now so many reasons could be the problem or not. but exersise , sensible eating, should be ok.

Our Whippet was neuted at 4 years old and does have a weight problem.

She is raced and we have a constant battle with this for the last 2 years.

Her food intake is monitered constantly during the race season together with her exicise. She would have 2 seasons a year every 5-7 months and always put on weight, so it was very difficult to keep her race fit.

That was the reason for having her spayed.

She is a very loving dog but we have noticed that she now plays a lot harder with the other dogs, wanting to be on top of them all.

But on the other hand Konnie was also neuted at 3 years and is now 4, she has come into her own and is blossoming

I have two bitches, one spayed...who eats twice as much as my unspayed bitch...otherwise she loses condition...

I agee with everyone else- there is no need for neutering to make any difference to their weight. All my 3 are neutered and are all now six; I havent noticed any weight gain

aaaw lovely photo, the one at the back is really posing. My dog is very jealous of your dogs beach, we've got pebbles mostly, and he hates them.

I think people think neutering makes dogs fat, cos some boy dogs can be a bit hard to keep weight on before neutering, mine wasn't interested in food before he was done, and it was a job to get him up to a healthy weight, and now he is a little pig. If he stayed in bed and ate as much as he wants to, he'd be fat as butter. I agree tho that its up to the owner how fat their dog is, mine puts on a bit in autumn, and loses it around now, as do I, got to keep your belly warm

This is my very favourite beach- the beautiful Holywell Bay, but they are spoiled and sulking in this photo, because they would love to be in the dunes instead, chasing bunnies! They are not allowed to go in the dunes in the summer though, because we have LOTS of adders and the dunes are one of the worst places for them

Good luck with Ripples, Banana. Lots of TLC for a day or two and she will be back to her normal self in no time.

Pippywhippet, yikes adders! My gang have developed a taste for slow worms, for eating and carrying around and rolling on, they are prized possessions. i often have to remove a bit from one of thems gob, makes me wonder what they'd do with a real snake, thats really scary...

Yes we do worry , always questioning the ifs and buts ! I`ve always had all my dogs neutered at around 10-15 months of age, males and females , and havent ever had a weight problem with any of them , good luck !
