Hi, I have rescue my second dog who was a stray so little history is known however we do know she has had 8 pups in January, she has been spotting with very red blood for the last 10 days but for the last two she has been spotting less and it I noticeably darker - does anybody know which part of season she may be in? I have no intention of breeding her but will let her settle before spaying her - was just curious how protective I need to be of her around others on our daily walks - I'd be really grateful to hear from anybody that may know, t

She is getting very close to being matable if she isn't already. A typical season is 3 weeks with ovulation generally occurring from day 10 and best days for mating 12-14. Some can ovulate earlier or later. I've known a bitch accidentally mated day 24 when by all intents and purposes she was done and shouldn't have and had a litter of 6.

So long story short you want to be keeping her well away from any males for the next week while she's at her most interesting and most fertile. I don't walk mine during that time. I entertain them in the garden. I personally feel it's not fair on the male dogs who may be out and around them, or who may pick up the scent later and play up their owners. They may even take off from their owners and come calling.

After 21 days she should be safe overall

Edit to add, best time to spay is right in between seasons so around 3 months from this one when the uterus is in it's resting phase.

That is so helpful and I'm so grateful you took the time to reply - I should have given more thought to other owners as you said so I will take your advice and do lots of hide and seek in the garden! Thanks again,
