Hi,

I might be getting a new puppy soon, French bulldog cross doge de-Bordeaux and was just wondering how often they need to be walked and how many times a day?

I work during the day but have some-one who will be home for the puppy. Never owned a puppy before so hoping to get lots of advice before I bring him/her home, haven't picked a gender yet haha :D

Thanks!

Hi Kirsty

You don't say how old your pup will be when you bring him/her home but assuming we are talking about an 8-10 week old then you won't be able to take him/her out until pup has had his/her second round of vaccinations which is normally sometime around 12-14 weeks. General rule of thumb, I was told, for how long their walk should be is 5 mins for each month of their age plus another 5. So if your Pup is ready to go out at 3 months then he/she should have about 20 mins per session. We have Holly, a GSD, she is now 6 months but starting off with that rule seemed about right when she first started going out at 14 weeks. We did about 15-20 mins in the morning and again in the afternoon and gradually built it up. I work from home part of the time so during the day we did short training games. Small puppies sleep a lot and have a short concentration span so these were done in short bursts! At six months Holly has two 45-60 minute walks a day. Sometimes we just go for a long walk and other times we play some ball.

Good luck with your new arrival! Puppies are tremendous fun but also very hard work and similar to babies so make sure you are well prepared!

Holly is my second GSD but I had forgotten everything since we had our last one as a pup and this site has been brilliant. They are much friendlier on here compared to some of the breed specific ones!

is there any update kirsty? how's the puppy?
