We are getting 2 new Whippet pups in Feb. Being new to shows how would I know if the whippets are worthy of showing?

Is it a height matter? Our last Whippet was very tall and elegant and stood naturally in the pose I've often seen in pictues. Like I mentioned we are getting 2 new pups in Feb and one seems to be a little smaller that the other.

Basically is there any preferences the judges look for?

They do have a good pedigree so showing was a possible thought for the future.

Are they show bred? Their breeder would be the best one to advise you.

Although they are from well known lines, is the breeder an experienced show person? Have both sire and dam been shown? What sort of success have they had?

If you want to show you should make the breeder aware that you want "show quality" pups rather than "pet quality" and the breeder should choose which pups he/she thinks show the most promise.

Of course there are no guarantees as pups, like children, don't always grow up looking the way you expect them to.

There is so much to learn about the breed and what makes a whippet show quality we couldn't tell you in one simple post. To have an eye for a whippet is an understanding of the standard that is acquired over time, seasoned with your own preferences for type also gained over time.

Get yourself a copy of the whippet breed standard and a couple of good whippet books (Patsy Gilmour, Phil Moran-Healy, Bo Bengston (the first edition) amongst others) and start hanging out at shows and meeting "showies" and start to ask questions with dogs in front of you so things can be explained more clearly to you.

Try to go to a few shows before they arrive and watch, ask people with dogs of similar lines (but not as they are just going in the ring (w00t) ). Theres a champ show on next week at Staffoerd if you are anywhere clos.

Thanks Aslan will do that, when we have the opportunity. My dogs are first and foremost pets and maybe fun running but if they turn out just so why not give them the grace of entering a show. Will look out for those books.

We are in Birmingham Juley, so Stafford is just up the road. What day does the championship fall?

Thanks all

:D

Its on Friday, judging starts at 8.30 am, at the county showground stafford
