Hello all :)

I stumbled across this site whilst Google’ing for info about whippets and lurchers, and have been mooching for a few days, reading the threads and admiring some of the many photo’s posted. My family and I have decided it’s time we got a dog again, having not had one for some years. This site has already been very helpful, but there are some questions I would like to ask. :)

Due to previous evolvement with a friend's racing greyhounds (Newton Abbot flapping track), and another friend's working lurchers, I favour some form of running dog... but of a smaller frame than greyhound sized dogs. Therefore, I think I am settled on a whippet based lurcher... but don't know what mix I should look for, or indeed, whether a pure bred whippet would be a better bet. I thought that if I posted here about what we, as a family, want from a dog, maybe I could benefit from your collective experience. 8)

Our primary requirement is for a family pet. We have 3 sons who all love dogs, although our youngest son (11) is particularly crazy about them (wants to be a Police dog handler when he grows up!) We want a dog that will enjoy a very active lifestyle, with lots of walking (4-10 miles a day, more at weekends). Our dog needs to have very good manners, as we visit and sleep over with friends and family quite often and the dog will come with us always.

A personal goal of mine, having admired an obedience display at the New Forrest County Show a couple weeks ago, is to try and train the dog to a decent level of obedience, possibly to take part in either obedience or agility trials with him/her. No particular reason, except that it looks great fun. :)

When I used to go out rabbiting with a friend, one dog of his used to particularly impress me. ‘Robbie’ was (I think!) a 1/4 collie, 3/4 whippet. He was compact, athletic and very bright. With my limited knowledge of the various lurcher ‘types’, I think a dog like Robbie would suit us very well. I also *really* like the look of Miss Madam’s bedlington/whippet in this thread. Adorable!

I’m also not against the idea of a pure bred whippet, but am unsure about the obedience part. Forgive my ignorance here, but is it necessary/desirable to have a bit of collie (for example) mixed in if I wanted to do obedience trials? (I know that Robbie seemed much ‘sharper’ than the greyhounds I used to help exercise :D ).

We will be looking to find a puppy some time in the next few months, so are not in any rush… we could take a puppy now, or we could wait for the 'right' litter to be born. :)

Thanks for reading this over long note, and thanks in advance for any replies.

Cheers,

Wayne Kennedy

hi Wayne, I have owned whippet lurchers for around 17 years . I have also owned a pedigree whippet for the last 18 months . In all honesty,I have found that a good whippet can do anything a whippet lurcher can do. Most whippets are fairly intelligent so i don`t think you would have a problem there. The only advantage a whippet lurcher can have is either extra height on a pure bred , or in the case of a Beddi/Whippet a rough coat which gives them a bit more protection if they are diving into cover etc .

At present we have a collie/whippet as well as our whippet bitch. The collie/ whippet is a lot heavier built than the ped obviously , and a little slower. She`s very intelligent though, and will face any cover to get to the bunnies.

At the end of the day, it`s all down to personal preference

Thanks for the response Nigel. :) I dont actually plan on hunting with any lurcher we got... I just see a small lurcher type as ideally suited to the lifestyle we have to offer. But then, a pure whippet could be just as suited. At this stage, I'm really gathering info on the types of dogs I like, so we can start to try and track down breeders. :)

For personal preference, I am torn between the rough coated dog I linked to above (bedlington/whippet), and a smooth coated one (pure bred or otherwise). I like both, but probably favor the broken coat slightly. :) My comments about collie X are because I have memories of Robbie, and how good a dog I thought he was.

Have you posted any pics of your dogs here? I'd be interested in seeing the first cross collie/whippet, especially. :)

Thanks again,

Wayne

hi ,, i have a book called "whippets" by barrons publisher . in this book it does have a chapter entitled smart as a whippet . i own 2 whippets and to be honest dont do too much obedience training but i do show them . this in itself requires a degree of training ie standing still for sometimes quite long periods ,, and i do find them very loyal , affectionate , obedient pets . saying this my dad has a bedlington / whippet who is just as clever as my whippies    again personal choice ,, the more you put in the more you get back ,, that goes with any dog. good luck and you know we will all want piks when you finally get your new pup ,, whatever it is  :luck:

I have a sweet little 12 month whippet x mainly beddie bitch & a 10 week blue merle collie x lurcher dog puppy (pics on Lurcher.org - I am crap at technology) and they are both gorgeous!

Lupin the whippet x beddy is rough/broken coated and looks like a mini deerhound and is great fun. I don't work her (altho she was sniffing madly round some rabbit holes the other night) and she was rather naughty at obedience classes, but as she never strays far from my side she is a delight to have.

Zephyr the collie x lurcher only had his 2nd jabs last night so can't come out for walks yet but my old Holly the Collie who died at 14 last year was a real gentleman of a dog.

I think you will find that somedog will just 'grab' you and you will be smitten and that will be that. There are lots of hounds inc puppies looking for homes on www.lurcher.org & www.dogpages.org + rescues so no shortage of choices.

Best of luck and enjoy looking!

Hi Wayne, Welcome to K9

I have a whippet/bedlington/greyhound 2 year old bitch Chance, she's very very loyal, really smart, not to big in size, fantastic with my 4 kids and is a total pleasure to own

I've only one little problem with her, VISITORS!! she's not nasty one bit but she does get very excited and jump on my guests when the try to sit down and usually lands on thier heads (w00t)

I also have a pure bred whippet 7 months old male, Binx  , he's just the same loyal, loveable, smart, great with my kids and again gets very excited by guests, I think Chance led the way a bit with him lol, both are smooth coated (Chance is blue, Binx is silver fawn),

I suppose with any type of dog you will only get out of them what you put in, I totally over-done the socializing of having loads of new people visit my house when they were young,

and I think this is why they want to cuddle and kiss everyone who comes for a visit now, it wasn't so bad when they were little, and could sit thier whole body on your lap lol, now well it's a different story!

:luck: :luck: in your search for the type you want but what ever you choose you won't be dissapointed

Chance & Binx (as you can see there's not much difference in height)

Welcome to k9 :D ........Whippet's as said earlier can be very obedient and trained for anything you like .........All 6 of my Whippet's are just as well behaved as my obedience collie, and my friend wants to steal my two pup's for agility :D ..........On the other hand I do think the Whippet x Collie type's are normally easier to train as they have the Collies obsession to work/please ......... The only Beddie x Whippet I know is a fab dog, who is eager, obedient and very willing to please, but he goes to far and suffers greatly from seperation problems and is a very highly strung dog ....... :luck: :luck: with your search .........

Wow, thanks for the replies, and warm welcomes. :)

The trouble is, I like the look of every dog I see! We are only getting one dog. We are. WE ARE! :D

Nigel's Tia looks fantastic... reminds me very much of one of the greyhound puppies I mentioned I had raised, and 19" is a very handy size. :) Much bigger than that, and I'd be looking at changing my car (which I have already been considering this last few days :D ). Is this a typical form for a 1st cross collie/whippet?

Chance and Binx are gorgeous too. Binx is much sturdier looking than I had imagined whippets to be before I found this site... the few I have seen seem of much more slender build.

In the end, I think that Loopy is right... while looking around, we will spot a puppy that will grab us, and that will be that. :) Right now tho, I think Tia's pic has me looking for a collie X whippet. We're not really in any rush... although we *could* take a puppy now, waiting until the new year would mean not having to take a young 'un on our Christmas travels. :)

Thanks again,

Wayne

yes Binx is an exception!! he eats like a horse (w00t) (w00t) whippets are usually a bit slimmer than him lol, his Dad was a big doggie though so I'm told  but still a top champion at races!! :D

HI EVER HEARD OF FATE? THERE IS A SPRINGER SPANIEL BITCH LOOKING FOR A HOME ON PAGE 1...... THEY ARE SMART LOVE LONG WALKS, AGILITY, WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR? GO ON READ IT!

SPRINGER SPANIEL LOOKING FOR A HOME.....

LET EVERYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENS THOUGH WON'T YOU.

Snapdogs, thanks for the heads up… I got your PM too. :)

Unfortunately, we're not really looking for a Springer, which would probably be too big for comfort. Also, we would prefer to get a puppy rather than a full grown dog. We did have a long discussion as a family about what we wanted from a dog, and whether we could take in a rescue. We decided we'd rather have a puppy where we can make sure it's socialised to suit our life style (for one thing, we need to make sure it's good with our African Grey parrot, which would be more risky on a full grown dog of unknown temperament).

Because we need a fairly small dog, and want a puppy, I'm assuming that rescue kennels are more or less out of the question, because it's so hard to know for sure what the parentage is for the few puppies they get in. :( That said, I am scanning the rescue forums for any known small lurcher puppies that may crop up, as well as looking for a breeder who has, or is planning, a litter of the type we are looking for. Our criteria have been narrowed down to a small dog (or bitch) about 18-20" tall. We're hoping for either a collie/whippet, bedlington/whippet or a stocky pure bred whippet (or maybe some other blend that stays small and whippet like :) ).

Cheers,

Wayne

Zephyr's red merle brother and sister are still available (at last count).

11 weeks old tomorrow and gorgeous!

Have pm'd you as my outgoing email is up the swanny AGAIN!

Grrrrrr to bulldogdsl!

Loopy,

PMs received, thanks. :) I'm going to phone Zephyr's breeder tomorrow, and see which pups, if any, are left.

As I mentioned in a PM, there are a few options available, including a litter of first cross collie/whippets, some bedlington/collie/lurchers and some pure-bred whippets. From reading these forums, I am now neutral on the question of whether we get a pure-bred or a small lurcher... I know that whatever dog we end up with will be perfect, so I am letting fate play her cards. :)

I'll keep everyone here updated with any news. Thanks again for the warm welcome and kind advice.

Hi Wayne,

Little red merle girl is now spoken for and being collected Monday (unless they change their minds which is doubtful).

The little red merle boy is still available and is a beauty. He is pale golden red with white 'eyebrows' and black freckles on face with a fairly pale golden red body (not many black markings) and darker tail with white tip!

Sounds like you have quite a selection to choose from......

Have fun & best wishes!

Louise

Thanks for the update Loopy... we've just been and visited Many Tears, for a look at Summer...

post-12-1123068866.jpg

She is a little darling, and we are smitten... home check tomorrow morning, hoping to dash back down and collect her as soon as we get the 'Ok'. :) I predict she will have us all wrapped around her little toe within the week.

All that is known of Summer's breeding is that she was rescued from a puppy farm, and her mother was a ped bedlington. She is very leggy for 9 weeks old, so the suggestion that the father may have been a lurcher could be right. Her coloring certainly suggests a collie influence, and she is as friendly as anything, so I think she will be perfect for us. Only time will tell whether those gangly legs stay long enough for me to get away with calling her a lurcher. ;) :D

I'll get some photo's of her up once we get her home, and people can take guesses at her breeding... I'll be interested in any opinions. :)

Cheers,

Wayne

I'm SO pleased you like Summer and hope your homecheck goes well.

Give Sylvia my regards and say I'm glad she has found a home for Waxa (I failed my homecheck on him cos of mini roundabout outside my front door).

I will look forward to more pics of Summer and I am really glad you fell in love!

She's a sweetie & wonder how long her legs will grow?

Make sure your garden is secure with 6' fencing and dogs can't get out of front door onto road.

Best wishes

Louise

Hello again all :)

Well, the home check went well, and Summer is now home with us. :) I'll post a couple of pic's here for consitency, but will then move on to the General Discussion forum for future updates, because whether or not Summer qualifies for the title 'lurcher' is debatable. :) Her head is pure terrier at the moment, but at 10 weeks I dont have the experience to guess how she will develop!

She arrived at Many Tears with a bad dose of worms, and is pretty underweight, so for now all that matters is socialising her, and getting her puppy fat back. :D

I'd like to thank everyone here for the helpful comments over the last few days. Much appreciated.

Hi Atlay, welcome to k9, thanx for the nice comment on my bedlington/whippet 'Cody' your pup 'summer' does look quite like he could be a lurcher as he looks similar to how 'cody' looked when he was a puppy, but time will tell

however he/she is gorgeous
