Hello!
Im new to this forum so hello everyone! Looking for some support and advice! I have a 8 year old JRT who is really chilled and well behaved, as a family we have always rescued dogs and are used to the challenges this can bring. We have been volunteering at the dog rescue and of course it wasnt long before we got another dog as we are soft! Shes lovely, shes a 4 year old JRTXBeagle. We have only had her 3 days and her history is unknown and im fully aware it is early days however when we leave her she is howling. Our other dog is really chilled so wont be giving her any high energy anxites. We have been using a crate in the day and she is happy with this however, she howls for the first 20 min after we leave, she then settles and then howls again after another few hours. We have been leaving her for short bursts but today we left her for 3.5 hours and the neighbours (who are very ok about it) said she howled constantly. Any advice on helping her to calm and settle would be really gratefully recieved. I totally understand its early days and im in no rush but its making me anxious and is making me worry about leaving her! :( . Also to add, she is walked on 2x 1 hour walks a day. Please any support or advice would be great!! x

Do you have the crate covered over the top to make it feel more secure and den like ?

I experience this problem with my dog. He suffers separation anxiety, but fortunately he only barks for the first 10/15 minutes after I leave rather than the whole time.

I'm no expert, but I would try leaving her with a puzzle ball filled with tasty treats to keep her occupied. Also reinforcing that upon your departure, she gains something positive. I also think it is important to not make a massive fuss of her on your return. If she's barking and you come in and fuss her, she'll see this as praise for her howling.

Maybe try leaving her alone for short periods of time whilst your still in the house, and return/reward as soon as she silences?

Hope you have success!
