They're off to a flier for tsunami appeal

Tuesday 1st Mar 2005.

IT'S a flying start for racing dog Jeebs as he leaps into action in support of the tsunami appeal.

Jeebs was among more than 50 dogs entered for a series of races as owners turned out in force to support Westhoughton Whippet and Dog Racing Club's meeting in aid of the appeal fund.

Dogs from all over the North-west competed in the club's fun meeting at the Bolton and Westhoughton Greyhound Stadium.

By the end of the afternoon, £345 was raised and there have been further pledges of cash from other dog owners.

"We are delighted with the response," said club treasurer Jacqui Glover. "We may do something else in the summer and find another charity to support."

The club meets each Thursday evening at the track in Wigan Road, Westhoughton, and is hoping to encourage more people to become interested in the sport. Anyone who wants more information can contact Jacqui on 07904 377568.

Dogs take centre stage at Gin Pit show

Thursday 29th Jul 2004.

DOGS of all shapes and sizes took centre stage at Astley and Tyldesley Running Dog Club show on the sports fields at Gin Pit village.

A wet start to the weekend didn't deter country sports fans who came from as far afield as Scotland, Wales, Devon, the North East and Midlands for the club's eighth whippet, terrier, lurcher and ferret show which featured working dog displays and racing.

Saturday's show judges were father and daughter Albert and Sarah Radcliffe and Sunday's races were for the Top Ten points in the British Whippet racing Association championship.

Organiser and sponsor Keith Woodward said afterwards: "It was a pity about the rain early on Saturday but it was a good weekend. We'd like to thank sponsors Tyldesley Tyres, P & R Salvage, Adams Garage, John Mansley, Gibfield Garage van sales, Diane and Derek Hilton and Kensite."

Donations from the proceeds will go to St John Ambulance, Samuel's Boxes ( a charity for terminally ill children), The British Whippet Racing Federation and the Union of Country Sports.

Racing is held Wednesdays from 6.30pm at the Gin Pit club.

Tuesday 22nd Jul 2003.

RUNNING dogs, terriers and ferrets took centre stage in Gin Pit village when Astley and Tyldesley Miners Welfare Whippet Racing Club staged a two-day show.

Records fell in the charity event run in memory of a former club member and artist George Hartley.

Seasoned whippet enthusiasts were impressed by the quality entry with runners from the North East, Yorkshire, the Midlands and Hampshire boosting the local contingent.

Classy bitch Show Three made Peter Winter and Michelle Pointing's trip from County Durham worthwhile when she set a new track record at 8.20 seconds for 150 yards to take the Supreme scratch race ahead of Yell.

The consolation scratch winner was Astley entry Moonpie.

In the show section, judged by Paul Noon, Tye -- owned by Don Smith from Tyldesley -- took best overall lurcher with Cheryl Heath's Tag runner-up.

In the Bedlington Terrier class Lowton owner Mrs Lloyd's took top award with Cracker. Corey Harwood's Tiger was judged champion coloured terrier by expert David Edwards.

Whippet club spokesman Keith Woodward thanked supporters at the event and said: "We are making donations of £50 each to Wigan and Leigh Society for the Blind, Gateway at Walkden and Gin Pit Residents' Association."
