Hi all, just wondering if I should enter my dog in some of the lurcher races at the summer shows. One of my dogs in particular is really fast and loves to chase. The dog is also in top condition so it wouldn't be too much for her. trouble is she's only fourteen months and not fully entered yet and I'm a bit worried about her developing any bad habits through racing. I'm mainly worried that the tendency for racing dogs to do a bit of screaming might spill over into working. Never raced before so wouldn't know ! Not intending to take it seriously or anything - just a bit of fun!

Any thoughts?

One of my lurchers screams like mad racing, but it doesn't seem to spill over into anything esle, not yet anyway.

My whippet x collie bitch opens up behind the rabbits now and again , she doesn`t race though. The more catches the better I`ve found to be a good cure for yapping. I think the dogs yap out of frustration and excitement , once they`ve caught a few bunnies the problem seems to diminish . That`s my experience anyway, about 15 yrs ago I had a little 3/4 whippet, 1/8 bull 1/8 Bedlington dog. He was a bugger for yapping to start with.

Once he had started catching regular, it went most of the time , he`d still yap now and again though, a lot of people blame the whippet and terrier blood, yet my ped whippet never yaps .

Ditto Olivia - ours barks and whines like mad at the races and lure coursing but is completely silent when working (which he does very effectively!). I wouldn't worry about it, I think they know the difference.

Good luck

My Whippie Max started yapping after chasing a rabbit which turned through a fence, a sign of keeness ?

Recently I have teamed up with a fella who has a 22 rifle.

He shoots the rabbit and if its a runner, I let Max course it.This produces very easy catches and hopefully any yapping in the future will not happen. A further bonus is the young dog (10 months) has a easy work load and lots of practice at retrieving.(Sometimes !)

I think you`re right Mike , it is a sign of keeness , I`ve found the more work and catches they make , the less they seem to open up. Like I sais it isn`t a big problem if you`re on permission , but if you`re doing a bit of freelancing it could be lol
