Not eating and throwing up bile

Hello everyone. Our 10 year old jack Russell x sausage dog has been really I’ll over the past couple of weeks. At first he was making really weird wretching noises and not eating much and struggling to drink water so we took him to the vets. they said he had a lot of trapped gas in his stomach and the tissue lining his stomach was inflamed. They operated and gave him medication. This was about a week ago, but since then he has gotten worse. He struggles to drink water and to eat, and he is now throwing up bile. He has gone back to the vet multiple times since and they have ran tests but don’t know exactly what the problem could be, and they are unable to diagnose him. He went to the vets again today and they gave him an injection to reduce swelling in his glands. The vet said to give it 24hours to see if he gets any better, but so far it isn’t looking to good. He is very thin and lies down all day and his body temperature is low. I appreciate it’s unlikely anyone will be able to help, but sometimes vets make mistakes and miss some things, and taking him to a specialist would be something we couldn’t afford. I know it’s unlikely but I was just wondering if anyone had experienced something similar with their dog and has any offer for what the problem may be. This is kind of like my desperate last attempt at a miracle. Thank you for any help :)
 
I'm so sorry to hear he's not well, Enid. You say you wouldn't be able to afford a specialist - have you considered trying a different vet just to get a second opinion or some more ideas?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a good outcome.

Hi Judy, yes have tried three vets and they are not sure. But thank you for your suggestion and for your wishes
 
Best wishes from us as well. It’s not an easy time for the mite.
 
One of my bassets had a terrible bile problem and I now use slippery elm. Haven’t had a problem now for months. Hope you find out what the problem is with your friend soon

OMG! Miracles DO happen hoping for you so much! Vets sadly have very poor knowledge these days but tbh it is not possible to know everything! Have you tried asking for a referral to a specialist vet on gastroenterology?
 
Sounds very similar to what my dog experienced (admittedly after an initial blockage) he was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and gastritis. He is on a special gastro diet which controls things. Vet told me only 3 diets he can tolerate and that’s Purina gastro (can’t remember the exact name) Royal Canin gastrointestinal or Hills ID. He is on the Hills food. Anything else made him ill.
 
I should add that Royal Canin do a recovery liquid food. Freddie was given this after his second op as he wasn’t eating - it at easy to syringe into his mouth and full of nutrients to help build
His strength.

Maybe you could contact the PDSA and/or another veterinary charity and kindly ask for their advice here? I will pray for him, you and all…
 
This thread is four months old. Hopefully the OP got the problem solved.

Dearest Enid, I am so very, very, saddened to hear of your loss, it never gets any easier does it! Your dedication, and love shone through. Sometimes, there is just nothing we can do to change things, and sometimes, despite heroic efforts on all parts we fail. We learn from these things, and you have brought a learning curve to us all here at Dog Forum, for that I am truly grateful.

The fragility of life, which is so very prescious - very much seen in my work as a nurse (human) never goes away.

You can be proud of yourself, you gave all for your pooch, and now you are able to take some comfort that there is no more pain or sadness.
