Took my cat Giz to the vets today, so the vet could assess her tooth and let me know if it should be taken out...

She chipped the top of her front tooth about 10years ago, it hasnt caused any pain, but is starting to look a bit sore around the gum and she has a bit of tarar so i thought i would see about having it out..

She is 14yrs old....normal mogg

The vet has quoted me £237.00  + the £28 consultation fee this morning in which she weighed her and listened to her heart

I have an appointment for another vet tonight at 4.20 to see if i can get it any cheaper, she needs it done.....but i dont want to feel like i have been :- "

Advice from vet people on costs please

Kim,that seems very dear to me, but then my vets are very nice to me cos I`ve been with them for 13 years and they get ALL [6 cats, kittens, 2 whippets & 2 ferrets] my vet`y work-jabs and all.

The cat`s old age puts it at greater risk so perhaps that`s why they are charging so much.

Good Luck Pussy! :D

Gavin

blimey that seems a lot, from what i have seen, it only takes a short while to do and they don't need a heavy dose of anaesthetic, i would deffo shop around

:luck: :luck: :luck:

Bloody hell (w00t) are they going to give her a gold false one for that, my cat has only been to the vets once other than routine but that sounds a lot of money to me :sweating:

Vet fees are very variable and not always a sign of how good a Practice is either.

We were talking to a neighbour who took her labradoodle in to our old vets too look at a patch of irriated skin; they didn't know what is was, gave some antibiotics just in case and suggested a flea treatment; they charged her £85; we worked out that the same from our vet would have been less than half that. We only paid just over £100 for full anaesthetic and the operation to reset Gelert's toe, and they have only charged a consultation fee for about half the follow up appointments too.

We changed vet after having several recomendations that our current vet was better and a lot cheaper than the others, without realising that they were greyhound and whippet specialists, and people travel from all ends of the country to see him.

Just ask around other dog walkers in your area, this might be the best way of finding the best local vet if you feel unhappy with your current one.

Just noticed your cat is 14. In my experience of having elderly cats, vets don't usually suggest anaesthetics for cats of this sort of age lightly, or for conditions can be treated in a less invasive way. My inlaw's neighbours' cat had a tooth operation at a similar age and didn't survive the operation. :( The owners were very upset as they felt they hadn't been fully warned of the risks before the operation.

:luck:

Now then Lesley, calm down and have a fag

keith

it may include pre-anaesthetic blood tests, a different sort of sedation and extra time/attention before, during and after the dental.

i have performed dentals on old cats, and its a delicate job, as it requires them to be tubed, the gas anaesthetic has to be spot on.

it also requires 3 nurses/vets sometimes, one to perform the tooth extractions, one to scale and polish, and one to monitor anaesthetics and heart/breath rate.

it'll also include antibiotics for afterwards, and a painkiller injection too.

hope thats helped you, you do think dentals are cheap, but when you find out how expensive they are- its a shock. but cats teeth are like glass and can shatter- quite delicate!

xx

I think the price you have been quoted is on the high side, as others have said shopping around maybe a good idea  hope you get Giz sorted soon :luck:

Right an update -

Went to my old vets, the one before i moved.....

they charge

£14.95 for a consultation fee

The whole thing will be no more than £90, that includes, clean polish, up to 4 teeth out if needed if its just the one it will be cheaper, anaestetic, all the little bits that go with the job

if she needs antibiotics + £20

and i have opted for a pre-anaesthetic blood test + £35

so no more than £145 at the max end....could be cheaper

thats £100 cheaper than the other vets, so i will be going back to my old faithful vet :huggles:

Hello,

We had the same thing done to our cat 18 months ago it was 70 GBP but the cat is 5 year old.

Our vet was recommended by the Cat Protection Society, maybe you could contact your local branch.

We are lucky because that vet is also recommended by greyhound rescues.

my vet's lovely - if it's just a check in after one of the cats or dogs have had treatment, the get a cuddle and the whole thing's free!

and he used to be the vet at a nearby greyhound track

Only just noticed this thread.

My dads cat had same prob, last year, shes 10 and it cost my dad about £150 i think, so your second quote is about right!

Hope everything goes ok :luck:

Hope Giz is o.k. My cat Loki is going in to the vets tomorrow for the same thing. He has a chipped canine tooth & his gums are a bit inflamed. I have been quoted £45 for the GA and then between 35-88 for the dental itself depending on whether the tooth is extracted or not. Then A.B's & painkillers about £20.

So anything from £100-150.

Loki is insured but don't know if they will pay out as it may be classed as cosmetic so I'm sort of hoping the tooth comes out & then it will be surgical & I can probably claim & only pay £50.

I took Loki in yesterday & he needed to have 3 teeth out. 2 very small ones at the front which were loose & the canine tooth that was chipped. Altogether it cost £115 so not too bad really. Still hoping I can claim some of it back on the insurance but will have to wait & see what they say.

Is Giz O.K.?? Has she had her dental?

Julie.
