So she 'Tilly' has just eaten her bed...... little white balls of fluffy stuffing all around the garden....she ate the lino last night

Ok so it MY fault cause she didnt go for a walk yesterday to let off steam :- "

So to stop the night time naughtyness, i want to put her in a cage. Might stop the weeing in the kitchen thing too :(

Where do i go to get one, i would like to buy it on line if poss, how much should i expect to pay??

Please help before im left with no house  :(

Have a look in the FAQ forum under hardware for dogs you should find what you need to know there

A crate is a good idea for Tilly to have her own space as well, the advice I'd give is don't get one too small because you are bound to have 2 whippets in time  :- "

I got mine from Ebay o:)

Ebay is a good place to get a cage but it may take a week or so to come .If you have got a copy of Dog World or any other dog mags there is usually ads in there for cages that you can have delivered within 48 hours although they may cost more

I got one from k9 kennels near to Crewe they do mail order on line it measures 48*34*36 for about £67 plus delivery I collected mine as they are local

Better add this is for a greyhound not a whippet he needed one that big as it was the only one high enough for him to stand up in he is 30 inches at his shoulder

I bought two new cages on ebay (she outgrew the first) and they arrived very promptly (about 2 days I think). The name I purchased from was gwdavies28. The cages have two doors which is more useful than one, and plastic trays which I find better as the metal trays are a bit noisy.

I would highly recommend a cage for a puppy. Dolly was so easy to housetrain using it - she had very few accidents in the house. As soon as she came out of the cage I would take her straight outside until she had been, and she has always been clean in the cage. :) It also preserved the kitchen units etc that she seemed to like to nibble!!!

It gives you peace of mind if you are out of the house as you know they are safe and also not wrecking the house!!

Good luck with you pup. :luck:

As 6 month old Tilly has not been caged before I feel introducing at this stage of her development may prove stressful for all concerned. Using a cage from the beginning is the ideal. Being popped in the cage when having to be left alone at times during the day is as much for the puppy’s own safety as well as saving any damage to the house and sleeping in the cage at night is fine if the pup has always had his bed there.

If a cage has been used from early on they will treat this area as their own bit of territory so to speak, a place where they can go if they want to be left alone and have peace and quiet.

To be honest I don't know if using a cage this late on will help really.

Giving her things that are ok for her to chew and toys and bones ( previously frozen and thawed) will keep her occupied and hopefully save her from chewing things she's not supposed to. After saying that we all lose the odd thing to our whippets, most love shredding stuff.

Have you thought about letting Tilly sleep in your bedroom, whether on your bed or on a dog bed on the floor. Most whippet owners do let their dogs sleep in the bedroom and many myself included let our dogs sleep in our beds.

:luck:

Tilly was kept in a cage when she was at her breeders house she has been with us a few months now, so i would like to introudce her back to a cage i could do it slowly

Unfortunatly (husband) wont let her upstairs or in the bedroom to sleep. and as she is having accidents or on purposes weeing and pooing in the house i dont think this would be a good idea..

Is it normal for her to come in from being outside maybe all day and wee on the floor???

I dont mind losing things to her, i have put up with it from the kids for long enough, but when she rips up the kitchen floor its a big of a no no....

Ive found that the Croft cages are far better quality than the 'cheaper' ones

I got mine from argos £35 and its ok.

If you decide you’d like to try a cage, put her bed inside and let her come and go as she pleases with cage door open. As said in earlier post she will consider it as her own bit of space. Leaving her for short periods to start with and see how it goes. After having the freedom of the whole kitchen and then being put into a much smaller confined space may take time for her to accept.

If you leave her in the cage at night she is obviously going to protest about it. Be prepared for her making a big rumpus and don’t expect a good nights sleep for a few nights at best. A younger puppy would settle down in a short time but I don’t know how a much older puppy would react to these changes.

It sounds like she needs a refresher course with the house training. Has she been clean but recently reverted or has it always been a problem? Praise her and reward her when she goes outside and does her business, whippets have a fairly sensitive nature and respond well to praise rather than being scolded for being naughty. If you catch her making a mess indoors point to it and say naughty girl in a firm voice straight away to let her know you are not happy about what she just done and put her outside at once. You have to persist with the house training. You will get to know when she might need to go so put outside and stay with her until she has a pee and then fuss her and tell how clever she is.

Hope this has been of some help, hope she makes good progress. :luck:

If she's allowed access to the outside for most of the day then perhaps she doesn't understand that there's a difference to the outside and the inside. Take a look in the FAQ section on housetraining, there's a lot of advice on going back to basics, as Mazza suggested, which is agreat idea. Go back to hourly pee-breaks with lots and lots of lavish praise. And have the back door shut so that she understands "indoors" and "outdoors", and that she's going outside for each pee-break.

I don't know what you mean by on purpose peeing in the house. I don't think dogs have that side to them, to do something like that on-purpose. She is very young, and just needs a bit of re-training by the sound of it. Don't punish her for doing anything in the house. Just pop her outside and do a quiet clear up while she's not looking, and go overboard with praise and extra playtime when she does it where you want her to!

Try this link: FAQ threads and good luck! Let us know how it goes :luck:

edited to say I've just re-read your original post, and it sounds as if the poor thing was bored out of her mind yesterday, under-exercised, and driven to eat her own bed and the lino for something to do! Toys... Kongs... Pig's Ears... get them all, they'll save your furniture

Don't worry about it, honestly. We all have days like that. Yesterday was a bad day for me too, what with the rain, and the children being home for school holidays and getting stir-crazy, and a mountain of laundry, and our new puppy peeing in the house too :( I went to bed last night feeling a very rubbish person, but woke up this morrning feeling better. The sun is shining, we went for a walk at Blaise, and today has been a GREAT day (w00t)
