Hi

Just need a little advice..Bryn our twelve year old whippetX suddenly leaves the room at speed in a half crouch, he does this suddenly and leaves the room in a blind panic...it sort of looks like either he has cramp/trapped nerve or something but he never leaves the room fully upright..always at a half crouch.

He has only done it recently at random times, sometimes after laying down he will leap to his feet and do it but just now he was standing next to me and turned and ran.

he is otherwise fit and healthy although his sight is going and he is almost completely deaf..he still loves a scamper in the woods and is waggy tailed and happy.

If I take him to the vets I'm not sure they can do much as its a random thing, just wondered if any of you guys have seen anything like it before.

Could be anything at this age , hope it is just oldtimers and nothing too serious

If he's not on joint supplements already then glucosamine/chondroitin + green lipped mussel might help and certainly wouldn't do any harm. A bioflow magnetic collar would also be worth a go.

If it seems like cramp then adding some potassium to his diet might help - bananas and tinned tomatoes are good sources of potassium, or you can buy supplements.

Good luck, I hope you are able to find something to help him :luck:

Oh dear :( That does sound stressful for you and Bryn.

Dogs can and do get senile dementia and it is possible that Bryn is "imagining" something  Does he return to normal almost immediately after he has run away? I would have thought that, if it were pain related, that the pain would stay for longer?

I hope you can get to the bottom of it :luck:

yes he returns to normal immediately...last night he ran away as though he had a major injury...at a half crouch all flailing etc then turned rond and walked back in but we did notice he was ever so slightly not putting weight on one back leg...the one with only three toes.

If you think it may be a dementia problem it's worth talking to your vet, there are supplements like Aktivait which can help.

thanks, he is on Vivitonin which is supposed to help...he only does this odd behaviour every few days and honestly I think he is actually feeling something and a tiny part of me even thinks its something akin to what happened to Woody....as it only happens infrequently and we cannot as yet pinpoint what is happening I am reluctant to take him to the vets as they won't find anything from my vague description....it is most likely a nerve getting pinched( like poor Woody)or cramp but at the moment I can't ascertain which it is.

I'm monitoring him closely and I will be having a chat with the vets this week but I don't want Bryn put through anything at the moment as he has only got over his Xmas nightmare of surgery and staples and poor healing etc and it's too much for him, he copes very badly.
