my whippey is visiting the vets tomorrow to have his manhood taken away. altho they are both present, one is hidden and i am told by the vet that altho he is ok (until he is about 5, hes now 3 this could do with being dealt with.

i know the vet is the best person to ask, but is this a particularily painful and difficult operation?

also, is only one showing common with whippets?

It depends on where exactly the undescended testis is ... if it is in the inguinal canal (the groin region) it's reasonable easy to remove (although there will often be two scars instead of one). If it is higher up inside the abdomen the op can be longer and the dog may be more painful afterwards because the muscles of the body wall will have been separated in order to reach the testis. The op isn't difficult per se but it can take a wee bit of rummaging to find the testicle if it is hidden in the abdomen! I'm sure he'll be absolutely fine either way - they get over these things amazingly fast. :luck:

It is quite possible to remove the retained testicle in case of future problems, and leave the normal one, in case you would like that option and it would leave your little fellow with one. Of course you may prefer to have him neutered for convenience. Just in case your vet did not offer you the choice.

Well there's a question. :) Some people say that it's a very common problem with whippets. I've known a US person to say that it's endemic in UK whippets.

I've got 5 entire males here and I've never had that problem. So far anyway.

Even if the testicle is retained in the abdomen they get over the op quickly. Often if it is retained there then the dog experiences some pain when running flat out so they are pain free once they've recovered from the op.

A lot of the whippets who race and are affected by this problem only have the internal one removed.
