Hi all. My five year old male collie is dry all day, when we are home he asks to go out but he pees and poos every night in the kitchen. He is crate trained and we had thought about putting him back in the crate at night but it is so big and the house is small, I really don't want to bring it back in again. Sometimes he will wake me at about 3am and I let him out and then when my husband gets up at 6am he has soiled in the kitchen. I wonder if this has become a habit and if we shut him out of the kitchen would it stop. My husband is afraid he will mess in the rest of the house which would be harder to clean but I am getting desperate. My kitchen is like a public loo at the moment. He was neutered as a puppy. He is quite a complex chap with a number of insecurities.

You have hit the nail on the head right at the end of your message. He is insecure. That's what it is.
He wakes in the night, you're not within his immediate reach, he gets anxious and soils.
If you have crate trained him you need to go back to that. I wont explain as you have already done this, but I will say this. put the crate in your room for a couple of weeks, then on the landing, then finally downstairs of a night time. A couple of weeks at time. This will gradually ease his insecurities, as even though he will be locked in his crate he will see that you are there, or at least close by and should just settle back down if he wakes in the night. Done over time, he will learn this a routine that happens every night (EVERY NIGHT WITHOUT FAIL!!!) and that's just how it is, as he knows you are around if you need him.
This will take a while with your dog being insecure.

Don't forget to go outside with him when he toilets and reward him for choosing the right place. Dogs learn to hold on in order to get the, high value, treat that is available when they toilet outside. Reward based training also increases a dog's confidence
