OSCAR

Oscar is a 4 year old ex-racing greyhound. He is a black tuxedo boy who is going to be truly gorgeous once his coat gets some shine and condition in to it.

Oscar arrived to us very shy and nervous, unsure of what was going on. He has spent all his life so far in racing kennels, so is wary of new situations and environments. Once he knows you, however, he is a different dog and becomes very friendly and adores his hugs and rubs. He is a lovely boy really and is just begging for someone he can place his trust in.

Oscar improved hugely when he made friends with one of our other greyhounds, Panther (pictured below in front of Oscar). Panther is a laid back, calm boy and Oscar soon started following his lead and becoming relaxed and friendly too. They make a beautiful pair and would do so well in a home together, though we will home them separately if the right one comes along.

Oscar has behaved very well with our other greyhounds and enjoys being in their company. He has not been tested with small dogs or cats, though these can be carried out prior to adoption if requested. Often ex-racing greyhounds take a bit of socialisation work to realise smaller breeds are in fact dogs as they would never have seen them before.

Oscar has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding and patient at the start and allow him time to settle and get accustomed to the huge changes. It shouldn’t take him too long to settle down if he has another doggie buddy to show him how its done.

Like most greyhounds, Oscar will not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week.

In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don’t shed as much as other more popular dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.

**UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2010**

Oscar has now travelled across to the UK where he waits for his forever home, ideally with his best mate Panther. We would love to find these guys a home together as they really compliment each other’s personalities, but we can separate them if the right single homes come along.

**UPDATE: DECEMBER 2010**

Oscar has settled nicely in to our UK kennels and is doing very well. Though a little shy and uncertain of his surroundings at the start, he now knows everyone at the kennels and is a lovely friendly lad with them all. He loves to give kisses, as you can see! He likes his routine and does still rely on his friend Panther to show him how to react in unfamiliar situations.

Like many ex-racing greyhounds, Oscar is now learning that dogs can come in all shapes and sizes. Right now he is excitable around small dogs and must be muzzled when they’re around. With lots of positive socialisation with many different dogs this boy will improve, however, all he needs is a bit of time and patience. We are requesting experienced owners for this boy and his pal Panther, who understand the need for them to be muzzled but who know what fantastic house pets they will make.

**UPDATE: JANUARY 2011**

Oscar is still looking for his forever home, preferably with his friend and teacher Panther.

Oscar really needs the love and affection of a foster home to continue to improve in confidence now, and we feel he has a whole new personality hidden in there, waiting to come out with a bit of gentle TLC.

Oscar's profile has a new update!

**UPDATE: MAY 2011**

Oscar has been waiting to be adopted for a very, very long time now, and we would dearly love to see him in his forever home in time for the summer.

Oscar is a real people hound and is a favourite in the kennels. He is the kind of hound that grows you over time until you come to realise you truly love him. He can worm his way into your heart if you just give him that chance. He walls well on the lead despite being a big boy and our kennel volunteers love to walk him. He bonds very well with the people he knows and is always happy to see you.

Oscar boy is now on youtube! Check out this gorgeous lad here:

Oscar can sadly be a bit sketchy with other dogs, and this is his only downfall. He is not yet accepting of small dogs and still has a high chase instinct. This is a work in progress but will take time and repetition.

Oscar can also be a bit grumbly with some of our other males and likes to be the macho man in the group. We feel that this could potentially dissipate once he is out of the very inflexible, competitive environment of the kennels and in a loving home where he can learn that he will get his fair share of everything.

This boy will need time and firm but gentle guidance from his new owners, and he is sure to give back tenfold what he gets. Oscar is a fabulous dog and could be so giving and loving to the right owner who will appreciate him for what he is.
