Hi everyone. I have a major barking problem with my Samoyed puppy. He is very good at home but it gets incredibly embarrassing when we are out. As soon as he sees other dogs, he will bark and bark and bark... He ignores all commands and we've tried time outs and distractions but no joy. Once he starts, he won't stop and you could use him as a metronome, he is so regular with it! Plus it is very high pitched!!

We had to leave one puppy class due to his noise and are really struggling at another which we thought would be better suited as more help on hand. However, all their methods seem to be failing too. Is there such a thing as a behavioural trainer that will take your dog outdoors for you, introduce and get him to calm down around other dogs? Trainers seem to only mention home visits and we have no problem at home. He is just far too excited when out. He's such a lovely dog and so friendly, but all many people see is a nuisance.

When behaviourists say that they do home visits they mean as opposed to group training at a venue. Many offer both. They should come to your home and take a detailed history of your dog and his behaviour. Then they will want to see him in action so they will probably suggest taking him out together. Sometimes your description of his behaviour is enough though and it is not always a good idea to allow a dog to keep "practising" the unwanted behaviour. They will not "train" him for you. You will need to understand why he is behaving the way he is and then know how to manage him and help him stop the behaviour.

I would contact a behaviourist from either COAPE or APBC. You can be confident that they will be well qualified in modern methods.

I'm glad I'm not alone! My little lad is exactly like this and I've had good advice from this forum, but have yet to follow it up properly (its in hand, honest!). Looking at this thread might help - please let me know how you get on as I'd be interested if you have any success.
