Ok...spent the day with my friends in town. We went shopping and then went to the cinema to see The Ringer (its hilarious btw)

While we were waiting on the movie to begin there were adverts on the screen. One was for adopting children. I was outraged to see that this commercial had a picture of a puppy and across from it a picture of a child. Above the puppy it said

"It takes 1240 pounds to make her happy"

Then above the child it said

"Its takes NOTHING to make her happy"

Am I wrong in thinking that this is a very unfair message to be sending out to people about dogs. I found it awful that they would put something like that in an advert.

Yes you are, all that crossed my mind were the poor children without parents or family

Actually, I think it is a totally ridiculous message. Do they try to suggest that people thinking of getting a puppy should get a kid INSTEAD ? As far as being cheaper.........LOL

But seriously; am I missing something? :b

Thats exactly what I thought. I mean yes there are children out there who are looking for adoptive parents...but to compare that to the price of keeping a dog..its kinda confusing if you ask me.

I don't really get why it's 'outrageous', but I do think it's definitely high time people realised the true cost of keeping pets. :b

Well. it is lot cheaper and easier than to keep children, dogs do not demand brand name fashions  In any case one does not exclude the other. The reason people do not adopt children (as opposed to babies) very often nowadays is because women work and have enough struggle to fit their own kids in their busy lives.

To advertise children like pups is........... :x

So basically you don't have to feed, clothe, wash, play, send to school, help through her daily crisis because she's just happy?

I think it's also a bit simplistic to imply through adverts such as the one you quote, that adopting or fostering children is straightforward ... a lot of children who sadly find themselves in this situation have a great deal of problems. I think such children deserve every chance of help and happiness but it's a bit silly to say that it costs nothing to make such a child happy ... it costs a great deal of effort, determination and time and (often) heartache, tho the rewards are worth it.

I come from a family who fostered children, and through my work at school know personally a lot of children in and out of care. I am very aware of what is necessary to help these children and an advert which over-simplifies their case is not, to my mind, very helpful.

Sounds a strange sort of ad, cannot see the logic to it.

Where do they get the statistics from and why the comparison, it doesn't make sense.

Are they trying to tell us that all a child needs is love alone.

Unless they just wanted to attract peoples attention and get them to talk about it. In which case they succeeded, I think. :luck: Hope it will do some good for the kids.
