Our young Whippetty Lurcher of almost 6 months is very rough in play and nips with his teeth and just runs headlong into the other dogs, I know that this is common but has anyone any tips to bring this under control? I have had to buy a muzzle as last resort but can't bring myself to use it, he is such a loving and nice Boy otherwise.

aaw bless him... How are the other dogs reacting to him? Is he hurting them? And will he pay you any attention whilst this is going on?

My whippet, who's nearly ten, plays very rough, and depending on the situation, the other dog, and his level of craziness i either let him or step in and get him. As a rule if he doesn't stop when i yell Stop! Or if i hear a squeak, I go and get him. Some of his friends love wrestling with him and being chased and pounced on, and bitten on the neck, others hate it, and will snap at him, which is fine, or roll over and accept their fate. I rescue them at this point.

6 months old is still young, do the other dogs not tell him off, or is he just terrorising them? Is this as he is playing with dogs you know? Or strangers dogs out and about?

I would say, if he is too excited to listen to you and calm down a bit, then go get him. Then perhaps ask him to sit, and not let him go 'till you can see he has calmed down, perhaps with a lovely distracting treat.

He sounds great, he'll work it out sooner or later, :)
