Hi, we started to race our dog with the group in Cowley, Oxford and had to give up because of ill-health (father with quadruple bypass, me with thyroid probs :( ) . I always thought they were non-WRC meetings, was I wrong? I see at the top of the forum in the list of opens: Oxford PWRC - Cowley, Oxford - Straight ? Is this the same group?

Does anyone have dates for this year's racing in Cowley? I might give it another go, if only because the dog used to love it!

No your, not wrong Elizabeth.

The Oxford club is for KC registered whippets, its just not affiliated to the WCRA. It is essentially the same group but Petes Spokes retired and it is now run by June & Len McDonald. I'll PM you with their email address.

Is that the Len MacDonald who used to work in the paddock at Oxford Greyhound Stadium?

Answer to the question from Jan - yes Len did work at Oxford Greyhound Track for years. Reason why we have not affilated at Oxford is that we are able to run dogs who are over the weight or hight limit, or who are rescue dogs which while their new owners may know the parentage they are unable to gain the papers which would clear them to race at other clubs.. . I think at the moment every dog racing at Oxford would be passportable, it just that some owners do not wish to open race and so do not want to go to the expense of obtaining a a passport. There has to be a place in pedigree whippet racing which is independent, thereby giving people a choice. If you can rember back a few year when the foot and mouth crisis was raging Oxford was the only club able to run. The old Oxford Club was for over 25 years as a non affiliated club and as the members seem to like it that way we in the new club will continue in the same manner. giving racers a choice.

Well, there certainly used to be a fantastic variety of all sorts of wonderful whippy types there - lots of friendly human whippy types too! See you soon, perhaps :)

Guess where we went today???? ;) ;)

Yes, we had a lovely day at Oxford, and were very warmly welcomed by June, Gay, Cherry etc.  Lovely laid back atmosphere, some super dogs running and Zephyr even had a couple of trials himself (w00t)

First one he jumped over the fence and went for a run around, but after that I went to the end to shout for him and at least he headed in the right direction :- " though not exactly chasing the lure  We all had a great time though, and will definitely be back - thanks very much everyone!!

Come on Elizabeth (moriarte), your turn now! ;)

PS Took the camera  but the battery was flat

Glad you enjoyed the day Beth, we love racing as the dogs have so much fun. Our Archie had a bit of a disgraceful day today at South Cots unfortunately. He is in a deep depression and tizzy over new puppy and has forgotten his manners (w00t) (w00t) (w00t)

Oh dear :( :( what did poor old Archie do  Mind you, I expect whatever it was, they will have seen it all before at South Cotwolds -always hideously embarrassing when it's your own dog though! :b :- "

Love to Archie, he is bound to feel a bit shocked at the changes at home, but I'm sure things will get better as time goes by. :huggles:

Seen it all before and with bells on. Just a slight glitch I think. :huggles:

I'm sure he'll sort himself out soon . I beleive he needs a bit of confidence boosting which by the what most dogs need when you first clear for racing and you need to remember that this was ony his first race.

We too at South Cots will run and race dogs that are over both the height and weight regulations set by the WCRA as well as giving trials to almost anything with 4 legs. We like to make almost anyone welcome at our club which since we have introduced the o/size group has seen numbers grow.Good for such a small club.. ;) .
