:( just spoken to bob and jane....due to the kennel cough outbreak they feel it is best to cancel this weeks club meeting :(

good call  lets get it under control

 thanks julie. I work at a dog's hotel so better to be safe and not run this week :( so our next meet will be our open on 11/5/08

If all clubs cancelled for the next two weeks, it would give time for the dogs who have yet to show symptoms, to be kept away from racing. Most dogs show symptoms 8-10 days after exposure, so with a bit of consideration, this could be stamped out before it takes hold. Good decision Oxford  It really needs the Independent to follow suit

ive just spoken to my own vet....and they say if your dog is at 12 to 14 days with no signs then they have the all clear

so from the sound of that as long people that have had the virus stay away then the indi should be clear to run as that will be 14 days from the last race meeting

but i think it is wise for all club meeting to NOT run this weekend to stamp it out.

The problem is that not every-one does stay away. I know I saw some-one at the Champs 2 or 3 years a go who was walking a whippet around that was actively coughing. She tried to cover it up, but it certainly appeared to have KC. Unfortunately, it is the clubs that need to grasp the nettle and cancel in order for the cycle to be stopped in it's tracks. It would also be helpful to know which kennels are affected and then owners can quarantine their whippets if they have had contact with infected dogs. It is not just whippeteers that can be infected but your Joe Bloggs dog walker with oldies and pups. When mine had been in contact, we stayed away from areas where there were other dogs as a precaution.

Just my thoughts, it rears it's head every Spring :(

My thoughts exactly Jo  Some people will try to hush it up that their dogs have it, so they can get back racing as soon as the dogs stop coughing, instead of waiting the 3 weeks afterwards like the vet recommends.

We know exactly where ours caught it in 2006. They hadn't been near another dog in the 2 weeks leading up to a race meeting - therefore someone must have been at that meeting with an infectious dog. Don't want to go over it all now, but the clubs have to take responsibility for their irresponsible members. You have to bear in mind that there were people at Andover who had been in contact with these dogs, and ours included may not show signs for another week, so thank goodness for the cancellations, at least no one can unknowingly be passing it on.

i think cotswold did the right thing in not running but can not see why the indi should not run it will be 2 weeks from andover so if the dogs not showing sign then they should be in the clear if all 5 of mine are ok by next weekend and the indi runs i will be there but if 1 of mine is of colour we will all stay in doors it seems that its the owners that are putting these dog at risk taking 1 when other at home are not right i will not be going anywhere this weekend with my dogs and will only run if all 5 are 100% this could go on and on so i love my dogs 100%and would not put them at risk they will stay indoors until next weekend and hope that owner are honest if there dog gets it they will stay away not to infect other  otherwise we will be in the same place about oxford open were do we stop so lets hope indi can go ahead

I take my hat off to the cotswold and oxford clubs for their good sense lets hope other club follow their lead.

I for one will be staying home for the next few weeks now, with these puppies here we are taking no chances. but i would put money on it that someone with an infected dog will spread this around ( for points) IF the clubs dont stop them.

we need to stamp this out straight away. so we miss a few opens that is nothing to seeing your dog choughing their little lungs up.

and after all we are dog lovers are'nt we, not point lovers

yes dave i agree but how many people will take there dogs out to show out to the park etc im not in it for the points i think common sense and what if we all cancel everything and someone still comes in 3 weeks back to square 1 lets keep this out in the open and shame on the people if they do this i will keep my in for 2 whole weeks in my house so i no they are clear i can understand why you would not risk coming with them lovely pups to look after everytime we take these dogs out even to the park they are at risk they risk catching something or passing something on the last thing i want is my poor dogs coughing we should keep eyes and ears open i see if we hear about anymore cases in the coming week how long have these dogs had it ?since the champ since when ?we dont no

i agree

I also think the clubs should be shut this weekend. KC is a terrible thing for any dog to have. :( It's even worse when you have quite a few dogs as we found out.

Seth got it from the Champs, & we in turn passed it to alot of other dogs at our club. :(

We felt terrible even though we did not know. On the Monday after racing Seth started to cough, a cat had chicken bones out of our bin & we thought he had one stuck in his throat. So off we went on the Monday night to the emergency vets, only to be told no chicken bone in his throat & to take him to our own vets if the coughing carried on. Well it did, all mine caught it, & like I said we had passed it on to alot of other poor dogs. :(

We were also terrified because Wilf was only a pup. My vet put them all on antibiotics as a precaution.

We now have the same worry again, as I have been told that Rio Venture has a bad case of KC & Tilly ran with him at the Champs. Fingers crossed we have no coughing at the moment, so by Sunday we should be in the clear!

fingers crossed for you diane
