Hi there. I'm new on this forum but wonder if anybody can help me. Ellie, my 6 year old cavvie appears to have started with arthritis. She is stiff in two legs after laying down for a while and then it eases. I really don't like taking her to the vet where she will be pulled around and injected with stuff that might suit the vets pocket but not necessarily Ellie. I'd rather just give her painkillers and keep her going while I can. Is this the fair thing to do and can anybody suggest a suitable painkiller?

It's really hard to find a painkiller that is suitable for dogs that is easily available without going to a vet. Ibuprofen is definitely toxic to them, paracetamol is not as toxic but the dose needs to be controlled very carefully or you give them liver failure.
Really the safest thing to do is to take Ellie to the vets and get a bottle of Metacam or one of the other really well tolerated doggy painkillers, which you can get on a repeat prescription if Ellie does have ongoing arthritis and are very reasonable on a month by month cost.
You can stipulate to your vet that you'd prefer oral medication rather than an injection, and I can tell you that Molly loves Metacam to the point that she throws a tantrum and sulks if any of the other animals have some and she doesn't get to have any

Thank you much for your reply. I took Ellie to the vet today and she had been given Metacam suspension. The shock was how much weight she's put on. I just hadn't realised. This could be partly because she is less active. She's now at doggy Slimming World. She had lost weight before and was much happier.
