Dear mr/madame,

My name is Cecilia Johansson and I live in Gothenburg,

Sweden. At the moment I take a course in ”dog

behaviour”.

One of the tasks we have been given is to do a project

on our own breed, which in my case is the whippet.

I would be very grateful if you could help me answer

the following questions:

1.How do you think one should train a whippet to

achieve a good basic obedience and what should you

think of?

2.If I was a ”dog instructor” and was going to train a

whippet, what would I have to know about the breed and

it’s characteristics, and what is the difference

between a whippet and other dogs?

3. How do you train a ”race”/lure coursing -whippet

for the best result and what should you think of?

4.To activate a dog means that the dog should work

with its brain. What is a good way to activate a

whippet?

5.Enrichment means that the dog should be given the

opportunity to act according to its natural behaviour.

This should take into consideration the dog’s breed,

gender and personality. What enrichment do you think

is best for a whippet?

6.What kind of reward do you think suites a whippet

best?

7.Which problem behaviours do you think is most common

for the whippet?

8.What diseases are most common to the whippet?

9.Is there anything else you think one should know

about when living with a whippet?

I would be very grateful if you could take the time to

answer some of my questions.

Of course you are also welcome to contact me:

by e-mail: ciccijohansson@yahoo.se

Thanks in advance?

Sincerely

Cecilia Johansson

I advised Cecilia to come on here and ask the questions for her paper thinking that with the wealth of knowledge on whippets that there is she would get a much more reasoned and complete answer than should any ONE person respond.

So can someone give some serious and helpful answers for this person please?

My boys love to please. They are no angels but if they understand what is required of them they try their hardest and their greatest reward (even more than food) is mum letting them know how good they are and giving them a kiss and cuddle. Of course their greatest joy is running. Isn't that what they are made for? It's a great delight for all whippet owners to watch these special little people in full flight. A beautiful sight. Motivation........anything moving is interesting be it rabbit or butterfly and of course as with any living creature food is a priority.

Why are they different? I suppose every breed is different. Ours is special because they are so beautiful, so very loyal and loving. Humans are their best friends and they allow us to join in their games and become part of their society, not just watching from the outside.

A question of health? I read somewhere (forget where) that if anything at all digestive problems figure a little. Don't know how true that is.

Hope this has helped a little.

As you live on Sweden , why not come to the TAMMSVIK show on July 24/25 weekend .

I will be there !! YEH !!!!

Only 14 days to go

O.K,wrists well & truly slapped by Dawn (w00t) but at least I replied & I believe there is a certain amount of truth in my first reply!

Firstly, I haven't been fortunate enough to live with whippets for as long as a lot of people who are on this board,or indeed have probably not had as many as some. However,I certainly find them very addictive because of their delightful characters & there beauty.

I have found the best way to train them is by letting them think that they have taught themselves something, because if I try to make them do something, they just laugh at me & say "no Chance" I can't possibly do that, what are you on about!! In fact,i have found that they can indeed be very clever by pretending to be thick!

I have found that my dogs definitely respond to a calm & relaxed environment & are very sensitive to our different moods. They love to snuggle up with us at every opportunity & show their affection towards us.

Of course, the most important thing a whippet needs is to run free, but this is where they are perhaps most likely to go "deaf" on you, though I think in most cases they will eventually come back when they're good & ready!

My lot certainly have a good sense of humour & will always be on the lookout to cause a bit of mischief, especially when it comes to digging & pulling up plants & hiding things!

Health wise,I can't say that iv'e had any problems so can't really comment on that, though i think it's very important to feed them on a natural diet & to give them at least 2 meals a day as they do eat a large amount for a small dog.

I think the biggest rewards for my dogs is lots of love & attention & playing with them as much as possible

Hope this is a bit of help

:)) Have sent Cicci an email, cos I'd clog up the pages on K9.

PS:  Prawn,(because that's what he looks like) our weedy baby, is holding his own, shoving his brothers and sisters out of the way, so I think that he will make it ok. I know Asharna was a good mum last time, but she is so laid back about it all, it's quite unbelievable.

You could also try posting this message in General Discussion whippets. You may get more responses there from people who race and course their dogs.
