I'm trying to think of how to define the difference between a ped and non-ped whippet but my brain just isn't in gear this afternoon.

Does anyone have a definitive description of the two types of whippet?

(It's for a piece in my newsletter.)

...and here's a gratuitous non-ped shot of Molly for you as a thank you ;)

i'm sure there arent really any physical differences, its just that peds of any breed are registered with the kennel club and non peds arent. you cannot, generally, get a non ped registered, as to be elegible both parents need to be registered. there have been a few cases where registration has occured, these being dogs bought from dodgy people and suspected to have been stolen originally. a dna test is required to prove parentage, provided the alleged parents owners are willing. should both parents be k.c reg, and proved to be the parents of the pup, the kennel club can authorise registration. its a long and hard fight, with a likehood of failure, which is why its only rarely attempted, plus you run the risk of losing your valued pet if the breeders want back a stolen animal.

when you get down to it, as long as the animal is healthy and of sound character, a pedigree isnt that important. especially with the running breeds, as there seems to be very little introduction of different breeds into the bloodline. if you wanted another breed altogether, a pedigree can be vital, as with bull breeds, because some prats will breed their bitches with any old mutt and try to pass off the offspring as purebreed, regardless of conformation and character.

Im bound to get shot down for this (w00t) and I havnt seen too many non peds , but of those I have seen ....... I would say a big difference between the two is their heads

At the seminar last week Pam Marton -Pollock really went to town about heads , and said the whippet should have a` pear` shaped head . Of the few non ped , whips Ive seen ,I would say they have more of an `apple dome `head .

of course you gan get this in Peds too . a bitch I bred was apple domed, but overall I would say it was `untypical` in a Show bred ped whipppet.

Also non peds tend to have more feathering on their tails too .

but if its a whippet or whippet cross , who cares , I love`m all :huggles:

Right , Im ready for the lashing Im going to get  :- " ,

ooh, please don't let this thread start any arguements :(

The non-ped whippets I've seen seem to be noticeably larger than the peds, but I assumed this was because there's sometimes greyhound bred into the line? I may be complerely wrong but that's what I was told by a few whippety people.

Wondering now then, what range of sizes the breed 'standard' allows? Our Molly is definitely a whippet, a non-ped one I presume, and I know this as she came to us direct from her racing owners. A couple of people have thought that she wasn't a whippet as she's larger than the show whippies they have seen.

So, if the whippet people on here saw a whippet in the street, what would make you think that it was a ped or a non-ped?

.....please be kind to me.... I'm only a rescue so I'm not up on the etiquette side of things! (w00t)

other people have said on here that, depending on 'use', size can vary greatly in peds. such as show specimens being bigger boned and heavier than those from racing lines.

None of mine are pedigrees (well I will have one, but she's less than a week old), however most people think that this one is (I happen to know that she has 1/8 beddy and 1/8 grey). I would love to know experts opinion on the subject- is it possible to tell, visually, that she isn't a pedigree coursing whippet? She is 19.5" and 25lb.

ps I really won't be offended by anything you say, especially as this is the only photo I have of her standing and it was taken while her back was bad so there is no muscle on her back legs (I'll take another tomorrow)

Used to know a lad with a lovely black whippet when we first started racing years ago, asked him on our 3rd time at the track why he didnt race her, he said because she was 1/2 beddy & 1/2 whippet, she was stunning and if asked i would of said she was a pedi.

Also this is Totty (Kenmillone Silver Tongue of Lynperry) her father (and the father of my new peddy pup)

Just love Tam s` ears (w00t) :huggles:

I think racing &-non peds are straighter in stifle too (As are racing Greyhounds of course )

The backs are flatter looking cos they are probably fitter  and have built up muscle ;)

Difficult one this, i know there is a difference and big differences but between my 2 i just cant put my finger on it

Whatever is different between these 2, doesnt seem to apply to others!!

As Jax & others say the typical "non-ped" is flatter backed & straighter on the stifle. They are also "backed like a beam" as the old poem says you see very few keel backs amongst 'em. They have more thigh too, both in width & depth & aren't as tucked up as peds. These are of course generalisations there is a lot of variance within the type. There are plenty of them around that compare size & weight wise with peds. IMO.
