After several years of seeing posts regarding the return of these perpetual Trophies/Shields do we really need them? The trouble clubs and organizations have to go through to get them returned is getting beyond a joke.

I know it's a nice reminder of great dogs of the past and present, but lets be honest, some are alittle past their sell by date and not really what we would want to take pride of place in our homes.

I personally would rather be given a small trophy to keep, to remind me of my dogs victory on that day, even if it meant paying alittle extra entry fee.

Good point Geoff - altho i suppose newcomers to the sport like to take home the big trophy if they are lucky enough to win it, but if a trophy is given which can be kept then like you say it takes away the continuous struggle to get trophies returned each year and replace the older ones that may have seen better days, and if prize money is the only thing given then its up to the individual if they would like to buy their own keepsake

Maybe we ought to go the way of some of the big popular sports these days. A picture taken at the event with the relevant large presentation trophy - the trophy then retained by the organisation - paying a nominal sum to have your dogs name engraved on it.

A smaller presentation trophy could be purchased by the organisation or privately if you want to have one.

The organisation could simply pay the photographer to provide a copy of the framed photograph with a presentation plate or such like for them to present to the owner.

It all comes down to money. At Dawdon and Murton we always give trophys to keep but this costs the club over £50 per open per year. With £300 a year rent and insurance the club just carn't afford it so this year we have bought yearly trophys. The 50p the club's take off every dog just dosn't cover the cost.

not that we race our whippy but I think this is a great idea, I mean trophies are nice for the moment in time but where do you put them all, along with the kids dancing and footy trophies collected over the years ? :teehee:

a picture with a large presention trophy to hang on the wall or in the photo album

sounds good to me

maybe a jacket with that would be good too,not sure how much they cost, think i heard somone say £20

Jacket's are very nice, and alot of hard work goes into making them, but where do you put them when you've won 18? all our's are in the bottom draw :(

I do like the idea of a framed photo

some good ideas but we would be looking at a minimum of £180 per open to provide a trophy for the winner of each section to keep, I dont think the organisations and clubs could afford to do this. At the NNWRF the winners of trophies now have to sign a book when they take them this way we know who has got the trophy a fine of £20 is being implemented and has been for a couple of years now for failing to return the trophy and in the condition it was received,We are also in the process of renewing some of the old trophies that are looking past their best it is hoped people will look after them or they will have to pay to replace them.

Very true Linda, but the only point I was trying to get over, was I think it's time to call it a day with perpetual trophies/ shields, and instead, a little trophy to keep would be better.

I know it's nice to see who's won the event over the previous years, but we get to be reminded of past winner's in the whippet news (remember when) Good dogs are never forgotten anyway

when we were showing cats if you won a trophy you had to sign for that trophy it was a legally drawn up document if you did not return it the fine was £75 and that was 10-12 years ago you made sure that the trophy came back

Tony

i know where your coming from Geoff but a lot of those trophies carry a lot of racing history put on bye people from past and present including your good self but do agree it would save some hassle

why not get presented with the trophy ( if it's been handed back ) get your/dog photo taken with it and hand it back ,then let the club /nnwrf/bwra get it engraved at the winners expense . saves all the hassle of having to return trophy's.

Great idea john , whos storing all the trophys , teriann's bedroom since she left home has now turned into the nnwrf store room lol, i am even getting shot of her bed to make more room

i was cup steward for our local canine society for years and we had some large valuable trophies.if the person had come a long way and didnt intend returning the following year theyd pay to have their name and their dogs engraved on it and wed keep it and theyd just take the rosettes and prize cards home with them.if they did take a trophy but didnt return it on time they were fined.

Just another thought, what do you do when the shield is full with previous winner's?

Do we start removing some of the winner's names or do we buy another shield? Then we end up with 2 shields

i think in the past @ the rising sun u can get a plate with all previous winners on then get new little plaques for the rest of the shield thats if it is a sheild u r talking about. i can a problem with just getting your pic taken and your name added though as like dee has said *who is going to store all these trophies?* ie some of us put trophies on @ the barking dogs own open last year the majority of these were shields which will last about 20 years so if say they all just got the winners photo taken then the club wud have to keep them.... where wud we keep them? your talking no limit, 40lb, bitch, dog, veteran, yearling and puppy so thats 7 shields maybe 8 this year as there cud b a 36lb scratch on too so like i say who wud keep them all? bigger opens will have more on.

appoint a trophy steward who is responsible for storing them and sending out letters reminding people when theyre due back
