Hello everyone,

My Jack Russell developed an all over rash (from chest right the way down) and it is under his arm pits and in his groin and his ears on Sunday. At first my partner and I assumed it was a heat rash as he gets them now and then but they usually disappear soon enough. I have been giving him half an antihistamine (ceritizine 10mg)and that didn't seem to do anything, I gave him a full one for the first time yesterday and it still didn't do anything.

I should point out the rash on his chest has now shrunk on his chest and look small round and pimply but they look a little bigger and blotched under his oits and by his groin.

Yesterday, after net research decided it was time to do a flea check as my partner and I have bites but we have had the windows open so outnit down to mosquitoes/bugs. I found he had a bite or two under his fur (I should note he is short haired) and brushed him with a brsh on white paper and found what could be droppings. I did the damp test and they went a rusty colour. After washing his bedding, our bedding and hoovering yesterday I took him to the vet after they offered a free flea consultation. She run the brush along his back once then put it on the side then just persisted on a sales pitch of Advocate - which I bought and didn't mind doing so but she didn't even look at his rash.

I purchased a nitcomb last night and both my partner and I found no signs of fleas or droppings but his rash is still about.

He doesn't seem any different in his behaviour. Seems happy with life and what have you.

Could it be a reaction to a bug bite that got us all? What can I do to help his rash?

I have no money to go to another vet to get a better opinion until the end of the month but if it is serious I will find it. I am getting worriedabout it. He means the world to us. I don't want it to be something that could get worse and be fatal if we don't treat it.

Please help someone :(

Funnily enough my dog had pretty much the same symptoms only a month or so ago.

He had an allergic reaction to something but we had no idea what.

Piriton is good to ease the itching, and my dog ended up with anti biotics and steroids. Altogether it cost around £70 including a consultation.

Advocate is very good, I use it on my dog and he has never up to this point had fleas. Plus it worms your dog too which also very important, so keep doing what you;re doing.

I good way to ease the rash that is a cheap alternative until you can get him back to the vets is bicarbonate of soda and dissolved in warm water. It eases the itching.

Salt water is good too as it keeps the skin clean.

If you bath your dog stay away from his normal shampoo you use and try aloe vera shampoo. It is a natural remedy which will help skin rashes.

There isnt much else you can do except get him back to the vet when you have the money to do so.

I hope my little at home remedies help you and I hope your pooch gets well soon!

Yes, I'd say that this sounds like an allergic reaction too. This time of year there are all sorts of possibilities, from grass and bracken pollen through fleas and into washing powder, Febreze and food.

Have you changed anything around your home that he comes into contact with? Washing powder, toiletries, anything?

Calamine is good for calming the skin too, and although it clogs up the fur and looks filthy until it's washed out, Sudocrem has a local anaesthetic which reduces itching and has things to reduce redness too (I used to be our area's Sudocrem rep and have seen it used in all sorts of animals- and it's safe enough for babies to eat it without causing an issue).

I'm prone to rashes and the honest answer is that unless this rash happens directly after exposure to something that you can identify, you may never know what has caused this rash. I spent 2 weeks with a full face and scalp rash last year and my GP prescribed some steroid cream for it, but I couldn't apply the cream to my scalp so it was a bit of a surprise that the rash on my scalp disappeared at exactly the same time as the one on my face. We never identified the cause, just like we didn't identify the cause of the body rash I had a few months before, or the one a year before that. Sometimes it's just 'one of those things', so although I'd urge you to see a vet when you can, the vet may have no more answers than you do.

Hope your little one is less itchy soon :)
