I have seen, in the doggy press, that some insurance companies are dictating which referral practice your normal vet can use when they refer your dog for a specialist appointment.

I wondered what others thought about this? I notice that my insurance company, MoreThan, is one that is named and shamed. As I have heard other bad reports of them, since I signed up, I am now considering changing to another company.

I hate all the research that needs to be done though :( I seem to remember that Pet Plan were excellent though expensive, Marks and Spencer were good as were John Lewis. I will go back to the article and see if it mentions any of them as not participating in this scheme. I would hate my vet having limited choices when referring.

We are with Tesco - I think they are one of the companies doing this. I believe petplan are more expensive but don't increase premiums as much as other companies as time goes on.

At the moment John Lewis is not participating in the scheme and your vet can refer you where they want without you incurring a £200 penalty. Marks and Spencer are holding out at the moment and there is an online campaign to keep them strong.

I notice it is Prof Dick White who is leading this campaign so I presume that his practice "Dick White Referrals" is falling foul of the penalty. He is our most local referral practice so it would affect me if my vet wanted to send my dog there. We do also have the Animal Health Trust but am not sure if they both cover the same specialities of whether one is preferred over the other for differing conditions.

These referral practices are horrendously expensive and I wonder if the insurance industry is attempting to get them to keep the bills down?

It doesnt seem to be reflected in their premiums!
