Yesterday we visited a national all-breed dogshow with my Baton. He was not shown - we just walked... in the ring :- " and my friend made a picture of Baton stacking.

Thank you! :) Yes, I show him but not very often and mostly on International shows. He is already a Grand Ukrainian Champion and has 6 CAC, 6 BOB, 3 CACIB, 3 BIG, BIS-V... etc. I just visited show with Baton to popularize the breed, because whippets are not populrar in Ukraine at all :(

I can't say why  I guess because people here still prefer big and agressive dogs. German shepherds are still very popular, but most of them have very bad mentality and are uncontrollable  Also rottweilers, dobermans, am.staffs, etc. For the last two years labradors and golden retirievers became popular and also Russian black terriers and yorkshire terriers - these breed are of course much more good natured, but as they are popular, many "puppy mills" appeared  and prices e.g. for yorkies are very high, but quality

Maybe in several years the situation will improve - but now no one of my pups from the last litter stayed in Ukraine :(

Baton is of my breeding - he is the son of two Ukrainian dogs. :)

Thanks for that , he certainly looks a quality dog from his picture .

So how many Whippets, on average ,a would you get at a show ? :))

On some shows there are no whippets at all :( At the most prestigious International shows in Kyiv there are 2-7 whippets only :b Last year at our show were whippets from Russia, one of them was imported from USA - 3 times Club Winner, Ch.USA, Rus. Andauer Best Laid Plans, he is one of the best in Russia, but Baton was CACIB, Best dog and then BOB

Baton is just a good mover and has nice temperament and also likes showing :) Most of judges mention this qualities in descriptions.

Baton looks very nice and Im sure he could do well against a far bigger entry. Its a shame for you that there are not more Whippets, but well done for keeping the breed represented in your country.

Really shame :b But I'm trying to do something to make this breed more popular - I wrote several articles for Ukrainian magazines, then I sometimes take my dogs and we walk in the centre of the city and when people ask questions about how whippets behave at home, on walks etc., I invite them to visit us and to go for a walk with us and dogs, usually after that people fall in love with whipets

But - another problem - when people are going to take a pup, I don't allow to take puppy earlier then full vaccination and quarantine is over, so it is about 3 months, people wait for all this time and then at the last moment - something happens and they just disappear! Then another people want to take the same pup and I'm waiting again when they return from leave, and then they disappear again! So, it's better to sell pup to another country and be sure that new owner will love him and will not return puppy in a week  That's why it's rather difficult to make a deal with most of our people. Only possibility is to give pups to friends :b but in this case pups are of course much loved pets but usually are not shown.

I'm so happy that one bitch from my first litter has a very nice owner and she is shown regularly and will be mated to a very nice dog soon! So, I will be a granny and several small whippets will born

We have time wasters like this in England , and as you so rightly say , its much better that they let you down BEFORE they take the puppy , than a few weeks later when theyve changed their mind  , Better for you and certainly much better for the puppy

It will be a slow process but Im sure you will make a difference, what made YOU first get a Whippet?

If you can get one or two shown and they are seen to do well people will see how easy to prepare, show and win it is with a Whippet, plus they can have a few dogs with no fighting and aggression.

As Jax says we have time wasters over here, I think they MEAN to have one and want one but havnt thought it through properly.

Baton is very very handsome

In fact I didn't want exactly a whippet, just wanted a dog :b But my friend had a whippet bitch and I offered her to take a puppy when she will have. When pups were born, my friend's mom called and said we can take our whippet! But at that time we had a cat and my mom refused :( So, my friend's parents tried to sell pups and that pup who they offered to us was the last, because nobody wanted him - he was almost white only fawn ear, even breeders thought he has bad colour :( And they tried to sell him as a bullterrier, as bullterriers were very popular at that time! But nobody bought him (thanks to God!), and I asked my mom to come and "just to see puppies"... and as you understand we came back with a small white puppy! He looked so nice on our blue carpet  and our cat became his best friend!

Here is Willie at about 3 weeks

We were not going to show him and he was not shown up to 5 years! But of course I wanted a "bride" for my Willie and had to show him, then bought my second whippet Pollie... As one my friend says - "whippets are like potato chips - you can't have just one!"

Unfortunately my dear Willie died two years ago :( - he was only 7 :( and at that time pups from the first his litter were 3 months, so at that day I decided that Baton will stay with me!

So, I can say that whippets appeared in my life unexpectedly :)

The same situation happened with woman who took my Pollie's daughter - Natasha. She just visited a dogshow and had noticed a whippet puppy (at that time I had already shown Baton - he was baby of 3,5 months and Pollie and just walked with dogs) whom I hold and she payed attention to this white pup's fairy eyes - very dark and bright  And she started to ask many questions about the breed and then I offered her to hold the puppy and... she said she buys her! At that moment she didn't have the necessary amount with her and left as a deposit her very expensive ring and passport! I believed her as she had am.cocker kennel and usually shows her dogs and we both knew that if she will not pay - everybody will know it. And now Natasha can't imagine how she lived without whippet and says that Lulu is her best friend. Just look how Lu is happy with Natasha!

Maybe it is right - just to see a pup and to understand that you want to take him and you will love him, but not to think - if you need this dog or maybe not... I mean when people hesitate, they maybe just don't want this puppy and are trying to find a reason NOT to take him :(

What a super story and lovely pictures .

I for one would never ( I hope) be without my whippets , Look under `Whippets General` and see FULL MONTY and you will get a view of my `gang`

No white ones though :b

Baton looks beautiful...

I must say that I do have a soft spot for white dogs - speacially lean and fit hounds - they look so 'statesque'.

Looking forward to see more pictures of your lovely whippets!
