Hello,

I have had my puppy for 4 weeks now and cannot seem to find a good food for him with out him developing Colitis!

He's a Husky cross Lab, and when I first got him he was on Wagg Puppy which I heard was rubbish, so I gradually switched him to Lovejoys and within a few days he had blood in his poo!

Obviously took him to vets who gave me Pro-Kolin and Hills ID, and he was then fine, tried the Love joys again and Colitis within a couple of days.....

Read about giving him Natural Yoghurt with probiotics, so got that and more ID, and seemed better, and now been weaning him onto Wainwrights Salmon & Potato, and 5 days in.....Blood in poo and colitis again! :- (

Really don't know what to do!

I should also mention that he eats anything out in the garden, even on a lead, whether it's the branches on the bushes, the grass, leaves, daisies, bark, moss, anything at all, so any help on how to stop him doing that would also be appreciated as I'm at my wits end, and think my vet is fed up with me ringing him and taking him up there, not to mention the expense!

Many Thanks

Jo

Hi, your pup is so cute! I have a chocolate lab who is now coming up for 5 months - we had him at 7 weeks and the breeder had fed him Bakers puppy food which the vet said is one of the worst around. Since then he has been on Pro Plan which is a Purina product. It seems to suit him and he is growing really well and has a lovely shiny coat and a healthy look. It isn't the cheapest but seems worth it. They do sell it in Pets at Home but I order mine from Amazon as it is cheaper!

I hope you find something that suits him x

Thank you for responding! He is cute which is why he probably get away with so much!

Did you have many tummy problems when you switched your puppy over?

Everyone seems to be telling me different things, and I just want what's best for him!

Hi there,

i have a 7 months old Lab puppy named Bear.

He was on pro plan puppy robust when we had him but it was so expensive we switched his food.

we now feed him Sneyds Wonderdog www.wonderdog.co.uk

Bear is on the original due to his age and the fact he has been castrated. My trainer for Bear is a supplier so we get it directly from her! Great food and its only £17.50 per 15kg so not too heavy on the wallet!

if you switch his food start off by doing 80% normal good 20% new food for a week. then 70% normal 30% new and so on until he has completely switched to the new food. this will keep his stomach calm and when going to the toilet it should be normal.

if you still have problems with your puppies toileting and health i'd personally change vets and get some blood tests done to make sure he isnt intolerable to a specific food or ingredient. this way you will know and can take the necessary steps in getting the right food for him.

and in terms of your beautiful and shockingly adorable little pooch mine ate everything! stones, carpet, fencing, grass, mud, poo everything! mine managed to eat wild mushrooms once which ensued a mad rush to the emergency vet in the middle of the night to get his stomach pumped as they are poisonous to dogs! scary times!!! thankfully he was ok! :)

when he is out and about he shouldn't be able to eat anything off the floor if you have the right lead for him. this will keep his head up and focused on your voice and not what is on the floor for him to eat. same applies when in the garden. take him on his lead outside when he needs the toilet and watch him very carefully! also teach the 'leave it' command. once mastered it will work well when your walking your puppy.

this is tedious and you get fed up of this very quickly but you must persevere with this as it will work! i promise! :)

My puppy Bear is bred from a field trial back ground so his nose is like a blood hound to a certain extent constantly stuck on the floor when off lead! i have a halti for my little man and this works very well for us. he doesnt pull because he cant and keeps his head up! he hates his halti but as soon as he is out he isnt bothered and quite happily prances along next to me, walking to heel.

hope this has been helpful for you :)

Ahhhh, Bear is so cute! :)

Thank you very much for responding, I swear having a puppy is worse than having a new baby, and it feels like the vet is treating me like a neurotic first time mum! :ermm:

I've put him back on the Hills ID kibble form with some more Pro-Kolin to see what happens, and we've had a poo with some form to it, but still a little bit of blood and mucas, but his cage wasn't a mass of poo this morning!

I'm hoping to get him into puppy training classes this friday if he has settled so I can start on the training, as I'd like to do Agility with him when he's older just as an excercise option!

When he's out on his lead he doesn't seem to bother with eating everything, it's just in the garden and round peoples houses when I take him anywhere, dust bunnies are a favourite, especially with dead spiders in them! :> (Not at my house may I add)lol.

I'm going to leave him on the Hills for at least 6 weeks now to give his belly a complete break, and then go back to the drawing board in terms of food, and hopefully he'll have hardened up a bit with age!

Again, thank you so much!

You're welcome!

I hope your little man's tummy settles down.

If his poo hardens up then you are on the right track but if there is blood and mucas in it you must take a sample and take it to your vets.

This may be a result of a change over in his food as my aunt had the same problem with her Rhodesian Ridgeback but this come be something more sinister.

If your vet isnt interested them take him elsewhere or demand that tests are done.

I'm hoping it is just his food but i am very paranoid and cautious with things like that with my little man and i would have no issue standing in the vets until something was done for him!

I don't have children, i am a 100% dog person and if having children is anything remotely like having a puppy i'll pass!

Bear is growing up to be a wonderful dog though having some teenager issues with him now he is at 'that age' so i'm just trying to grit my teeth and get past this wonderful part of his life! haha!

good luck and keep me posted as to how your little guy is doing
