Don't know how many people are watching Hugh from river cottage trying to fight for a better life for chickens, it's awful for the poor birds the appalling conditions they live in to produce cheap chicken. :(

I know free range are dearer but I would rather eat none than keep condoning this treatment.

Please sign up if you feel this way too I don't know how much good it will do but anything's better than nothing

Thanks Trac :huggles:

Please keep trying the link if it doesnt connect straight away, it may be fine and just be my connection

did this on a rescue site the other night but i think the more that see how animals live(and die) to provide us with cheap food the better. :( if you put pics of these chickens at the roast chicken aisle in a supermarket maybe more people would pay a few pence more to give them a better life?awareness is everything.if we can see what suffering is the lot of these birds then maybe we would like to make a choice to pay more to give them a better life.i always buy free range chickens and eggs too.

Definitely, thanks for putting this on

Thanks for putting this on Lesley. I've been buying only free range chicken for a while even though I stand there thinking, can I afford this, but know that buying anything else is just condoning barbaric practices. I've now decided to buy all my meat from our local award winning butcher - they have their own abbatoir and all suppliers are signed up to good practices - the quality is also excellent too! :) I bought some chicken breasts there the other day and they were huge! (w00t)

Thanks everyone  I really think the supermarkets should do something, I know a lot of people couldn't afford to feed a family free range chickens because of the price and size of the birds.

They should stop giving processed crap away on buy one get one free offers and charge less for proper food

They don't seem to be very forthcoming to talk about it though do they 8)

Also the government shouldn't allow these chicken mass producers to carry on and should be helping the free range poultry farmers IMO so they can lower the price whilst still making a living

Signed and joined up

Used to keep my pony on a free range chicken farm when I was in my teens.

I helped with egg collecting and rounding up the chickens when they were put in the sheds at night. They lived a totally natural life scratching around during the day and produced year on year quite willingly!!

All chicken and egg production should be done this way - I'd pay more to know the chickens were being treated well

one thing that got me angry is surely it costs more to keep the poor chickens locked up each day with the cost of heating than to have them outside how i hated to see a man cry like tonight with hugh :(

Can I just raise a little question about the chicken programme o:)

if Whittingstall is so against intensive rearing how has he found it acceptable to set up a simulated factory farming shed go along with killing undersized birds ect ect?

Answer~ to line his pockets but that smacks of double standards to me he preaches no one should eat intensivly reared chickens but finds it acceptable to intensivly rear a batch for his series?.

as for the Supermarkets ~ what you all need to do is contact the supermarkets and tell them your happy to pay £15-20 a bird that way they will be able to stop using intensive rearing and they will be able to pay the farmers a decent price for their products the practice is driven by us consumers who want cheaper and cheaper food.

I asked a simlar question on the official river cottage web site about 18 months ago my post was deleted and my account put on Mod review? so the supermarkets arnt the only ones who wont comunicate when questions are asked LOL.

I've added my name - but I think we already have the power to change things- simply by not buying factory farmed food. I appreciate it's not easy for people with families on a limited budget, but quite often you see people with loads of crisps, sweets, biscuits , ready meals etc in their trollies, and very cheap chicken - I know what I'd rather feed my family on..........

In principle I agree, and I am happy to buy free range eggs and chickens for myself. I am not that keen on chicken anyway, but free range poultry does taste much better. But what are we feeding our dogs?

i always buy free range eggs or meat. but wish that birdseye etc would use free range chicken or at least start up a free range product.

did anyone watch the lie of the land last night?

very interesting. comming from a farming back ground it upsets me so much what has happened to farming.

£2 is the price of a x bred bullock, bred just to keep the heifer in milk but the bullock cant even be seen as economic to rear for meat so is slaughtered for the hounds instead at a few days old.

what has this country come to???!!! :( This goverment isnt even bothered about farming quality products and is happy to import. pathetic

well in all honesty i dont just blame the government i blame us. :b we have the power to drive what these food companies put as a priority.ill give you an example.a company who import soft furnishing from india that we buy from will only use fair trade goods.theyve now sent us a letter saying that because of customer enquiries and expectations they will be giving us much more info to pass on to our customers ,and i quote 'we will be concentrating on sourcing the best products from our suppliers and putting in lots of effort to convey the story of how and where they are made so that you can sell our products with the confidence that is vital in our changing market place as more consumers become aware of the enviromental and social issues behind each product'in other words they know that people are asking more questions and are more aware of both enviromental and social issues and they want to make sure that people will buy their products knowing they have been fairly sourced and the people in the villages producing them are being paid a fair wage for a fair days work.if people in the uk are concerned about people making these products half a world away then surely the supermarkets must know that in our changing enviroment people in the uk are concerned about the animals that produce our food here in the uk and that most people would be willing to pay a bit more to make sure the animals have a decent life

JUST TO POINT OUT THAT ANYONE THAT SAW LAST NIGHTS SHOW.....

WHEN THE "ALLOTMENT GANG" WENT TO HUGHS FARM TO SEE THE HENS, THE ONLY PERSON NOT CONVINCED ABOUT BUYING FREE RANGE WAS THE ""LARGER"" LADY!!! :- " WHO KEPT SAYING THAT IT SHE HAD TO BUY THE CHEAPER CHICKEN COS OF HER MONEY BUDGET!! BEACUSE INSTEAD OF HER BUYING ONE £5 FREE RANGE CHICKEN SHE WANTED THE 2 FOR A FIVER CHICKENS .... HMMMM.... WONDER WHY?????? :- " :- "

If you want to stop factory farming, don't buy it. Simple.

If everyone bought organic, free range products, the farmers would convert to that kind of production because the market for it would be greater.

Meat is waay too cheap in my opinion, but signing petitions to try and bully farmers into changing their ways is unrealistic. In the first instance, this kind of farming requires more land to rear chickens on or less chickens being kept, either way the farmers at a loss. The only way you can expect these animals to be reared humanely is if you show you value them financially.
