Here is the story of the Wife of the handler taken off of the Videx German Shepherd dog website: (Please click here to view the picture of this gorgeous dog)

My Husband is a serving police dog handler and home office police dog instructor with Gwent police and for the past 4 years has had the honour and privilege of handling the most wonderful police dog. Saxon who is a 5-year-old German shepherd has been an extremely loyal and faithful servant of the police force and has been responsible for detecting many criminals.

Saxon has been my husband's partner, sole mate trusted friend and loyal companion during his service and on many occasions my husband has been alone in very dangerous situations with only himself and Saxon to arrest serious and sometimes violent criminals.

Both my husband and Saxon have been commended for their team efforts they even had a personal letter from the chief constable on one occasion. My husband's stories to me are endless and amazing and I feel safe in the

knowledge that Saxon has and will put his own life in front of my husbands to protect and look after him.

When off duty Saxon lives at home and is looked after by the whole family, my daughter takes him for walks and always plays with him. Saxon lives both in his kennel and inside our home where his favorite place is on the sofa next to my husband, sometimes I just don't get a look in they are like a married couple.

For the past 3 months Saxon has been housed at the police kennels at Glascoed where he has been looked after by the police dog handlers whilst my husband has been away.

A few weeks ago my husband was informed that Saxon was not to be re licensed as police dog and senior officers were to make a decision as to his future.

This was happening at the same time as another police dog Kye, and we suspected that they were to put both Saxon and Kye down at the end of their service. My husband stated his case and made representations on Saxons behalf offering him a retirement home with us as his family for the rest of his life.

We were as a family more than happy for this to happen, Saxon is not a danger, as anyone who knows him or has looked after him will testify. We were and are prepared to sign any agreement as to liability issues with regards to him.

Today my husband was informed that Saxon is to be destroyed and the reason given as being 'the responsible thing to do'

My husband is distraught and extremely upset this dog has meant so much to him over the years however as a serving officer cannot do anything about it due to the restrictions imposed on him by the service!

SAXON has no voice, BUT MY FAMILY AND I DO

Therefore I want to make an appeal for Saxons life and I feel that the general public should be made aware of the facts, please help us to SAVE OUR SAXON.

The police use Usk veterinary surgery at Usk for all the veterinary care for police dogs, surely they cannot nor any other veterinary surgery be asked to put down a perfectly healthy, fit and loyal dog just because it has come to the end of his service?

The Police management will argue that he is a dangerous dog, well that's just nonsense, just ask all the handlers and kennel staff who look after him, all the officers who know and respect him, ask them who is the best Police dog in Gwent? And guess who they will say.

I feel that the police management are treating this living animal with no regard whatsoever, like a disposable tool, he has had his use and now its time to get rid of him. Is this the thanks that they give to a loyal and faithful servant?

Will they do the same to other dogs in the future? How can anyone now donate dogs to the Police Service knowing that they will be destroyed at the end of their service.

The truth about Gwent Police dog section must be heard. Ask the Police how many other dogs they have had killed. The police have members of the public assigned to monitor the health safety and welfare of Police dogs, well where are they in this case and what are they doing, are they just puppets on the police's strings?

Yes Saxon is the property of Gwent Police service that are answerable to the general public and police by consent.

Saxon belongs to the people of Gwent who he has protected whilst we all sleep at night, who has caught criminals breaking into our homes, who has with my husband caught numerous car thieves who has faced armed and violent

criminals alone, who has found missing children cleaning their faces, who has represented Gwent Police at Regional Police Dog Trials, who has taken part in open day events, the list goes on and on...SO MUCH FOR A DANGEROUS DOG.

Saxons days are numbered he due to be put to sleep we need your help now, please help to save this wonderful dog.

Have signed the petition Mally. This is a complete disgrace.

have signed the petition , lets hope it is enough , good luck :luck:

i do hope all is ok :huggles:

this is no way to treat a loyal friend , fingers crossed for the right outcome .

I've signed...its disgusting whats happening to this dog

This is awful, to put him down after he has been a good dog to the police force. He is only 5 years old just reaching his prime, 5 years seems very young for a police dog to be too old. Must be other issues with him but even if for some reason he is unsuitable as a police dog why are they considering having him pts when a good home is offered for him.

Not a dangerous dog but a fantastic dog with the right knowledgable owner.

The handler is willing to adopt him so why is he under this sentence of death.

This kind of publicity will be very bad for the police force. Who of us have ever really thought about these working dogs and what happens to them once they become too old to do the job. I thought the racing greyhound industry had a lot to answer for but reading this it looks like the police are treading in their footsteps.

Hope Saxon and Kye are saved, these loyal brave dogs deserve a happy life.

Will gladly sign the petition. :luck:

I have signed also. Good luck :luck: and :huggles: to Saxon

I've signed. I think the comment that he is a dangerous dog is ridiculous, christ if there was ever a hint of this, he would never of made the grade anyway! Any dog is potentially dangerous, it's training and responsible ownership that is the preventative and I cannot see a more appropiate home than with the gentleman who has put all the hours of care into this dog.

I've signed it too. I agree with the previous comment, these dogs would not be allowed to serve let alone take part if there was any sign of disruption or mental and dangerous behaviour. They are trained to superior standard to protect and I'm sure that the owner/s of these dogs respect and love their animals or they wouldn't work with them.

I say let the dog/s enjoy a well-earned retirement in a loving home. It's absolutely disgusting to think that after all the dogs hard and loyal work that he can be disregarded as if he was nothing let alone his owners feelings too. Some people don't understand what heartbreak this man and his family are going through. Wonder how they'd feel if they were to be told that part of their family was to be destroyed for no good reason.

We have had a police dog handler in our shop and I am sure that he said he only kept the dogs for about 4 or 5 years too. Maybe they start to lose their enthusiasm for the job after that.

Have signed. I am really stressed about this poor dog, and his family.

:( i have signed as well & sent a e-mail to gwent police authority, its disgusting, prison dogs dont get put to sleep when they retire, hope this ends on a happy note

The dogs work (in my force) until for whatever reason they can't. Often the GSD have to retire early due to hip problems, arthiritis etc that are common in the breed. However, i know of one GSD working still at 10 and a drugs dog (Spaniel) still working in her teens!

I have signed too,and I fail to see why he cannot stay in your home with your family as he has already been there WITHOUT any problems up until now!! Over here in N.I our Police/Prison service dogs are homed with their handlers unless the handler wishes them not to be,for whatever reason,so I cannot see why it cant be the same over with you? :(

This has made me very angry and upset

:( is there any news on what is to happen to saxon

Family fight to keep police dog

Saxon saved Mr Townley's life many times, say the family

A police dog who saved his handler from an axe-wielding attacker has been put on death row at the end of his service, according to the handler's family.

Saxon, a five-year-old German Shepherd, protected Mike Townley, 47, many times during his time with Gwent Police.

His wife, Sylvia, say his licence has been withdrawn as he is now considered "unsafe" and could be put down.

She wants to keep Saxon as a pet. Gwent Police said Saxon's future was under consideration.

As a serving police officer, Mr Townley, a Home Office dog instructor, was unable to comment on Gwent Police's decision to retire Saxon from active service.

Two youths came out and wanted to beat my husband up - the dog stood in front of them and wouldn't let them near him

Caroline Townley

However, he has applied to keep Saxon as a pet and a campaign to see the dog released from the police kennels at Usk, Monmouthshire, has been launched by his wife, Caroline.

Mrs Townley said the family owed a debt of gratitude to Saxon, for saving her husband's life on more than one occasion, as well as "feeling hundreds of collars".

She said her husband was told last week that Saxon, who has represented the Gwent force at regional police dog trials, was to be put down and that decision had been confirmed.

Saxon has been at police dog kennels for the past three months

She said: " This dog would have laid his life down for my husband. Mike was confronted by a man with an axe, who would have killed Saxon.

"Another time Mike was searching a scrap yard for some people when he fell and broke his ankle. Two youths came out and wanted to beat my husband up.

"The dog stood in front of them and wouldn't let them near him. He gave himself 100%."

She said the force helicopter once filmed Saxon chasing and rounding up four suspects who were on foot.

Mrs Townley said her husband has been told Saxon is unsafe because he bit Mr Townley twice in the first year they worked together.

'Destroyed'

But she said: "He says it was completely his own fault. The dog was being defensive. Mike said Saxon has not bitten anyone unless he has told him to."

Saxon and Mr Townley had worked together since April 2003. Mrs Townley said her husband was "distraught and extremely upset" at the force's conclusions.

Gwent Police said a dog's destruction was only considered if a force believes the dog in question cannot be re-homed, re-deployed or retrained successfully and therefore presents an unacceptable safety risk to the public.

The statement read: "In the past three years, 11 general purpose patrol dogs have been retired from the Gwent Police Dog Section.

"Of these six either went to live with their ex-handler or were otherwise re-homed. Five were put down humanely to prevent suffering as a result of old age, injury or underlying medical conditions, after consultation with a vet.

"During the same period there has only been one case of a dog being refused a license on grounds of safety.

"The dog concerned made an unprovoked attack on a kennel handler and after careful consideration it was decided that the dog should be humanely put down."
