Our 16 week old puppy Freya has managed to tear her nail completely out of her toe, she didn't squeal at all, in fact she seemed oblivious until I bandaged it up to stop the bleeding. My sister found the entire nail (quick and all) on the living room carpet, I was wondering what the chances are of the nail growing back ? It's the ENTIRE nail that has come out, right to the root :sweating: .

hiya fleesh, i had a greyhound do that, and i didn't grow back just healed over, it might grow back but it won't if it doesn't affect her racing later on

Thanks Debbie I've been worried about her racing with it but her mother has very short nails on her back toes where she ripped the nails off (but left the quick) chasing a cat across a fencetop and it hasn't seemed to have bothered her.

Freya is being such a good girl, she's been racing around the house and garden with her vetwrap on wearing a little muzzle to stop her chewing it, it's almost as if she's not done a thing she just jumped off the bed now with the bandage on and not a peep. She's a jolly little pup.

where its bleeding just put potasium pomangenate on it, it will stop the bleeding and she won't need vet wrap, but atleast she is getting used yo a muzzle which will save you time later on lol

Our phoebe ripped her entire nail out when she was 6 months old and it did grow back but quite smaller than what it should be,we never have to trim that one claw which is a bonus with her :sweating: .

also our lurcher molly ripped hers out last year she was 11 and it never grew back.

Thanks trish - looks like wait and see then, our older bitch ripped the majority of her dew claw off and that's grown back tiny but Freya has ripped the entire lot out the end of the toe.

Will see how it looks later on Debbie, with her only being 16 weeks old she was quite squirmy/distressed when I took hold of the foot and tried to examine the toe so at the time I decided the best option was a bandage for the time being until the bleeding slows as it involves me having to touch it less I don't want to frighten her away from being touched/handled for fear of pain plus at 16 weeks I think perhaps there's more chances she'll knock it without a bandage and set it off again.

As for the muzzle, you've got a good point, though we had to put one on the other pup Lucy for a bit too as she wanted to know what it was and was trying to pull the one off poor Freya's head !!!

Our dog Woody did that at roughly the same age, he's 9 months old now and its grown back fully, although its slightly 'knobbly', makes no difference to him!.

My dog Kobi ripped a rear one completely out... (w00t) it has grown back but knobbly

and kind of hollow....it dropped out a couple of months ago again...and has still grown back...all be it a very short one...

Great stuff I'll tell Freya she's part of the nobbly nail club !!!

I've had to re-bandage already, the last one was soaked in blood and wet where she's been running round the garden playing (and of course chewed to bits - couldn't keep the muzzle on too long). "Luckily" the pain seems to have kicked in and so long as we keep her in the house as much as possible she seems to have packed in with the chewing for her poor sore toes sake. She still remains jolly little Fridgie (w00t)
