Hi
I need some advice. My Candy Pig has cancer the vet has said it's best to put her to sleep. While I don't want her to put her through any pain with the coronavirus around they have said we can't be with her when they put her to sleep. I don't know what to do keep her in pain (pain meds are not helping) or let her be put to sleep without the people she loves by her side...

I'm so sorry - this must be hard.

I'd be thinking about how much pain she is in right now, and how comfortable she is with the vet - when the vet puts her to sleep, she won't know what's going to happen, it'll just be like a routine vaccination from her point of view and then she'll drift off. Whereas if you delay it, every moment she'll be in pain. This is very much a time for doing what is best for her and not what 'feels right' for us.

Or you might feel she's getting enough enjoyment out of life to compensate for the pain - you know her best.

I'm sorry to hear this.

If she is in pain, and the pain meds are not working, it sounds like it is her time. You will know in your heart when letting her go is the kindest thing.

Could your vet maybe give you something to give to her by mouth a little while before you have to leave her, so she is less aware that you are not with her?

Our vet sometimes gives a sedative first.

However you feel, if she is in pain which cannot be well controlled, then it is time to let her go.

For me personally my dog would come first,if it meant I had to leave her, then I would for her sake.
I don't say this lightly,my old girl is 17 years old and she as cancer, so our time together is getting shorter day by day.
I wish you all the best,it's never easy.
