When we first got ginx she came down with an illness with in 2 days lost 1 kg, she had a temp of 40.c and yelped everytime anything touched her. She walked stiff with her back up and also had snotty eyes.

now instantly i assumed she had pulled something playing with the others, but why the temp and snotty eyes/nose?

anyway after a few costly vets trips, metacalm & antiB, she came right but the vets had NO IDEA! basically if i had some pian killer n AntiB i would have gave her that, they told me what i knew - she had a temperature!

Now luckily throu my family i have access to metacalm and the same AntiB because this morning i heard her yelp! she has again a little gunky yes, is walking stiff, back arched, and looks drawn in her face.

Nothing has changed in her life since last time she got this,

Maybe out playing she has "tweeked" an old injury??

but why the gunky eyes and nose again? Ok she could get a temp from pain if it was that bad, but its like she has an injury and a virus/cold and thats would be too much of a coinsidence to get it twice within 6 weeks!

Otherwise she is a happy healthy dog (8 months old - we got her 6 weeks ago)

we have just got her weight back on she lost last time , she is currently sat wimpering at the side of me. Ive gave her some meds, but im reluctant to take her back to the vets again when they were pants and even charged me for a "2nd check up" to go - oh yes she looks better!!!!

also when she was ill last time, after 1 day of treatment she was fine!!!! it didnt make sense?? how can intense pain/illness just go so quickly?

Is she a whimp??????

is she walking with a stiff gait head hung down and reluctant to move it from side to side or up and down ....maybe steriod responsive menagitis just a thought although the snott and eyes i wouldnt have thought would be a symptem but iv been told virus infection of some sort could trigger it off S.M.R that is sorry cant be of any more help just the symptoms you describe apart from the snot and eyes sound so similar to my tia when she was poorly :luck: :luck:

This is certainly a possibility as the intense pain, temperature increase and stiffness are symptoms of steriod responsive meningitis. Vets will always treat with antibiotics first to eliminate bacterial infection (it maybe that Ginx didn't respond fully to the first treatment and needs another type of antiB). Sometimes antibiotic treatment will mask the onset of SMR for a while

I'd take her back to the vet and discuss the possibilities with him/her. Not all vets are confident with diagnosing SMR so don't always accept the first thing they tell you. I know Nicky had to change vets to get her Tia back to health again and it was because of Tia and Nicky that I immediately knew when my Rosie went down with the same thing. She recovered very quickly because my vet was prepared to treat for SMR after the antibiotics didn't work.

Good luck and a gentle hug for Ginx :luck: :huggles: x

sorry i was half asleep wen posting so didnt take in all of your post ....well it was early :teehee: on a more seriouse note my tia is unluck in she had repeted relapses going between 6 to 8 weeks inbetween relapses and yes it is possable for her to be fine after just a day off treatment with anti bi's and metacam tia is living proof of that happened a few time to her before she was diagnosed ...maybe have look at few of my tias threads and see what you think but its worth mentioning to your vet and as jane said not every vet is that clued up on SRM

I'm just on my mobile so can't check other threads, is it long term treatment, reoccuring, or just treatment for now?

I don't mind using our usual vets but they seem to be better for java n wormers thatd about it, or I can use the vets I use for horses they r good

SRM is something which may never occur again or it can be a continual problem. The main thing is to catch it as soon as possible. That gives a much better prognosis. Some vets will suggest that a spinal tap is necessary but mine treats with prednisolone straight away if she suspects SRM. The only thing to remember is that steroids will reduce the dog's immune response and so if there is a bacterial infection, the dog may not be able to fight it off whilst on steroids and the steroids will mask the illness so therefore things can get worse. It's a bit of a gamble but if antibiotics have already been tried then it may well be worth the risk :luck:

Make sure that any vet you use is a small animal practice - horses don't get SRM (to my knowledge!!) Might be worth asking on K9 if anyone in your area can recommend a good sighthound vet

they are an everything practice, but i normally use 2 different vets for teh dogs and horses - only because i like to have a choice incase of these kind of things. I use vets for pets for our "normal" dog things, but i dont think they are great for serious stuff, they seem to want to pat the dog more than look at it, but are great for jabs, and other bits etc - and a 2 min walk away from my house.

But my "horsey" vets do everything, and although expensive are good when i really need them.

Ive googled SRM, and booked ginx in - i go in a minute. I explained what was happening and got told by the receptionist that dogs dont get meningitis!

sent her home with metacalm and synulox,

said they may refer her in a week to a specialist to take a spinal tap,

she has justlapsed on her 4 weeks free petplan insurance by 1 day!!!!

if i se up insurance now - will she be covered? or am i wasting even more money

id change vets then or ask to speak to a vet ,my tia has reacurring problem with this and is on steriods long term to help controll it and even though she has relapses every few weeks most of the time her quaility of life is excellent you just need to be able to read the signs ... i know now after a few relapes when she going to have one so up her steriods intake and we have found a balance for her to lead a normal active life ...srm doesnt mean its the end for them just means you have to adjust her life style to keep it under controll e.g controlling exercise and food as the steriods make them gain weight very quickly ......

youl be wasting your money as you have already been to a vets to get the problem treated so you would not be covered for it i believe this is what i was told  i mught be wrong but this is what i have been told

My daughter is a vet and has treated steriod responsive meningitis in whippets many times . Tell that to the "know it all receptionist ". These people should stick to their own jobs and leave the vet work to the vets .

It is not an expensive condition to treat becaus the treatment is prednisolone which is not an expensive drug .

Hope Ginx feels better soon :luck:

Hi Tinker sorry to hear but out of interest has the dog recently been vacinated? only i have had 2 whippets with auto immune and each case was triggered after having the vacine

yes,

ive been reading at it sounds like the cause,

We got her about 6 weeks ago, she hadn't had her jabs yet, so of course being good dog owners took her for her puppy jabs and chip - 3 days after the first jab, stiff neck - we thought it was maybe the chipping needle that may have made her sore , then the screaming etc. The vet told us she would have prob pulled a muscle, and they couldnt explain the high temp, snotty eyes/nose. so just gave her antiB and metacalm. within a day she was fine !!

then she got a bit gunky in her eyes after the 2nd jab but nothing to worry about - but this morning she was so sore after last night she was fine , the change in her is unreal! for a bright happy dog to one that couldnt even step outside for a wee.

She has picked up a bit now since having some meds.

hope evrything sorts it self out hun xxxx
