Post-op bloody runs

Hi, all,
My senior collie has recently had surgery and developed bloody, runny stools a day later.
This happened when he had surgery before, and our old vet gave him Metrobactin, which cleared things right up. I had some leftover Metrobactin so gave it to the dog to stop the bloody runs. At the (new) vet's office, they said they'd only prescribe Metrobactin if it was active bloody runs...which it wasn't because he'd had the dose of leftover Metrobactin.
They offered a probiotic paste, but he's already on one, and they said it wouldn't help to increase the dose of the paste.

So two question:
1) Why does a dog get bloody diarrhea after an operation?
2) Are there any alternative anti-diarrhea meds, over-the-counter?
3) Any home remedies to soothe an upset post-op tummy?

It's possible the stress of the hospitalisation could have brought on colitis, especially as collies can be pretty sensitive. A good over the counter is Pro-Kolin, and a natural remedy is a small amount of pumpkin, but that can be heard to get in the uk - butternut squash is an alternative and is sold in the freezer counters at big supermarkets.

Hope he is ok soon.

Maybe that's it. It has started both times after the anaethesia completely wore off, and he definitely is a sensitive soul.
Butternut squash! One is in the fridge, as luck would have it. Would a small amount be more like a spoonful or a handful?
He's already on Prokolin, was before the op, so no change there.

I'd go with a tablespoonful (cooked) as a small amount - a big portion actually helps move things along when they have constipation so you definitely don't want to overcompensate!
