Hi All

Hope someone can give me some advice, My whippet pup is now 5mths old and he seems to have constrant problems with his digestion. He has been on James Wellbeloved sensitive stomach puppy food since we've had him (7 weeks), but has had 2 trips to the vets for antibiotics and intestine enhancing bacteria paste for two bad boughts of diarrhoea, at these times he was put onto prescription I/D and then slowly weaned back onto James Wellbeloved, but his faeces seem to change on every occasion that he goes. The first vet trip involved faecal samples being tested, but nothing very specific came back from that. We don't give him scaps of anything, becasue Im now so paranoid that it will affect him again, although I did give him a raw chicken wing to subsitute a feed to try and get some weight back on him, but he vomited that up (oh and then re ate it before I had a chance to get him away!!!!, how does that make evolutionary sense!!!).

Anyway, after the first trip to the vets all seemed ok for a few weeks but then the consistency started to change thoughout the day, I then thought that maybe we were over feeding him, and overloading his system, so cut back a bit and it seemed to improve, but he got skinny and then he got poorly again and was off to the vets.

Hope you don't mind this graphic account of my puppy's poo!!! but he also has the most potent smeeling wind, which makes me think that maybe the protein amounts in this food are too much for him. I went for this food because of the good quality and high meat content. Surely it can't be this hard to feed a dog!!!! He has always be well in himself and really lively, so I don't think there is a medical problem, but just wanted to see if anyone else has had a problem with feed. I have noticed on past discussions that many people feed James Wellbeloved, so i am totally at a loss of what to do with him.

Please help!!! :(

Fiona

Sorry to hear about your problems, and welcome to K9. I'm not sure if I can help, but mine absolutely HATE James Wellbeloved, and it doesn't seem to get on well with their digestion either. Burns seems to have been the best for the quality of their poo, it seems to produce a good texture, but their current favourite taste wise is Proplan.

i have a 15 month old and a 6 month and from my own experiences puppys will have scour from time to time i tend to cut back to a bland diet for a couple of days and use kaolin morph, if the tests are showing nothing(why did the vet give antibiotics?) it just sounds as tho he needs a change to something hes happier with both mine get raw (i dodnt feed chicken wings) with a little nutro complete.

From reading and investigating diet etc i do not think protein would cause wind etc more likely high levels of cereal or feeding too much, if he is well in himself thats a good sign good luck

Can I suggest cutting out the complete food all together and trying Nature Menu frozen blocks. They are a complete natural diet. I haven't looked back since feeding my latest puppy on this.

Nature Diet

I get mine from the local Pets at Home

Personally, I would feed meat/biscuits. Complete feed just does not suit some dogs whatever anyone tells you about it being so good for them!!!

Thanks everyone for your replies.

The vet gave him antibiotics whilst they did the faecal testing, which took over a week, seems he didn't need them at all and probably stripped all the good bacteria from his gut!!!

I think I'll give the raw foods ago

see if I can fatten him up abit

Thanks again :))

:luck: Good luck Fiona, let us know how you get on

Fiona, we had exactly the same with our whippet pup (who is now 15 months old), from being 8 wks old until he was about 8 months old. Faecal samples tested, not much showed up, etc etc etc. In the end he was put on the Hills prescription diet but the diarrhoea continued - the Hills prescription contained maize or wheat gluten, can't remember which, but that used to irritate our older dog (not a whippet) and so I was aware that it might be irritating the puppy's gut lining too.

Anyway he ended up on Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Sensitivity RC 21TM/MC, via our vet - it is a Catfish and Rice meal, and this did the trick, his tummy at last settled down. And it had been very lively, when my boy was a very young pup I was getting up with him 4, 5 times a night when he needed to go out with diarrhoea, I felt like the mother of a new baby, sleepless nights etc (w00t) (w00t) His poo would start off solid first thing in the morning but by lunchtime/afternoon would be very runny. It was a nightmare at the time.

So we kept him on the Royal Canin Vet diet sensitivity until he was about 8, 9 months old, and then gradually weaned him across to James Wellbeloved duck and rice (adult). He can now eat more or less anything, but even the tiniest scrap of cheese would make his tummy explosive, when he was younger! Now his tum is like cast iron and he can chuck anything down his neck with no ill-effects - I never thought we'd get to this stage.

Hope you get your youngster sorted out.

Best wishes.

I put Dippy on James Wellbeloved and she got really bad wind, her poo was sloppy every time she went and the smeel of the poo was bad :x now I know poo normally smells but this was beyond smelly :x :x

I'm going to be starting her and Inca on the raw diet next week because I've been told its the best way to feed dogs...fingers crossed

Definitely, change his diet. And if the new food does not work, try yet another. But as your dog has had a problem for a while I would not expect an overnight miracle. To start with I would cook for him something like rice and chicken and keep adding large dollop of natural yogurt before giving it to him. That should settle his tummy, restore the intestine flora and calm down any irritation. Then you can test other foods SLOWLY. Do not worry if he brings up his chicken wing, he probably just swallow it too fast. To stop that hold it while he is munching on it, just let him bite off pieces and he gets the idea. :luck: :luck: :luck:

PS you can get couple of chicken carcasses, cook them well, remove the bones and at first skim the fat. You can keep this stock in the fridge for several days, but cook the rice fresh every day. Just take enough stock fro the day and boil the rice it until very soft. Add the yogurt only when it has cooled down, as the heat would kill the beneficial bugs.
