My husband and I have just adopted a male 8-week-old Border Collie puppy, and my in-laws adopted a male from the same litter, so they are being raised in separate homes by different owners. However we took our puppy over to my in-laws' house today and the pups wouldn't stop snapping at each other.... we will obviously want to see each other regularly but we are now concerned that we will struggle to have our pups in the same place when we meet up (we are spending Christmas day together, for example). Is there anything we can do to ensure the puppies can spend the odd day together in peace?

Are they play biting or is it over something? So is one guarding a toy etc.

If it is playbiting then it usually resolves itself as one puppy will avoid the other if it bites too hard. The hard biting puppy will learn to moderate/stop the behaviour. An older bitch is often good at stopping this kind of behaviour as they are much less tolerant!

If it is bullying by one puppy then you need to deal with it. Say a word like "enough" and remove the offending puppy. Put him somewhere safe with toys of his own etc. After a short while reintroduce him but be prepared to repeat and repeat. After a while the word "enough" should cause him to moderate his behaviour because he knows there are consequence.

Do try to enrol them in some Puppy Classes. Look for a trainer registered with the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) as they keep up to date with modern methods and are constantly updating their skills.

We are a group of Year 9 students at Stratford Girls Grammar School. We are entering a national competition to design an app that solves a problem. The problem we are trying to solve is for pet owners losing their documents. Our app will also include a calendar to log appointments for your pet, a chat forum to get advice from other pet owners and ultimately, store your pets veterinary documents in an easy to navigate app. Please take a minute of your time to complete a short survey to help with our market research. Thank you so much for your time!
